My driveshaft met it's tragic demise. I've removed it and have been putzing around town in 4Hi just fine until I can get it repaired. A few questions:

    - Are there any concerns with driving around in 4Hi and essentially being a front-wheel drive vehicle? Everything seems fine, just looking for some wisdom.

    - The steering is awful. Would reinstalling the sway bar be beneficial here? I didn't notice much difference when I removed it, but maybe as front-wheel drive the difference is more drastic?

    Thanks, guys and gals.

Should work just fine. :) Don't think sway bar would help

As long as there is no binding in the front end I can't see harm in it... It wasn't really designed to do that to my knowledge but I can't see it hurting it... Buddies of mine have done it many times in their trucks.

I wouldn't do it too much, just do it until you find a drive shaft to replace it with (dealer cost is around $1,100). Swaybar might actually make it worse.

I'm pretty positive you don't need to replace the whole drive shaft. The yoke is removable. Just take off that big nut and find a yoke to replace it with. Might be a good time to upgrade to yokes that accept bigger u-joints.

My son drove his first gen for a week without the rear shaft and it was OK. Just be cautious.

You are correct but usually you find drive shafts pretty cheap on here. I've bought 2 at $100 each shipped to my door.

literally, you can run it like that till the cows come home

no issues, no added tire wear except for acceleration

little bit of front wheel drive handling characteristics

little extra wear on transfer case and driveshaft

    zero binding

What about wheel hop when turning? I thought unless you were on loose ground that would bind the transfer case causing extra wear.

Can't bind if it's not connected to the rear end.

I once drove around for 5 years in my FWD '91 Corolla with no issues.

Like everyone else is saying (And you guessed) No issues. Take it to High Way speeds. Corner normally. Just don't don't go 4WDing. And yes, you can still use that drive shaft. They'll just cut the end off and weld a new one on.

I'd drive it till I got a new one. I know several people who have done just that. I'd just take it easy accelerating no hard digs etc.

What joe said. U don't need the whole shaft.
I'd fix it ASAP.driving on pavement puts a lot of stress on front end parts.

the front end has no differential.which means that when you go around a corner the wheels are moving at the same speed,so you are going have binding.that means you will have excessive tire wear and transfer case wear.normally the wheels move at different speeds going around corners, the outside going faster than the inside.this is one of the diffrences between 4 wheel drive and all wheel drive.
