Wat? Those 2 sentences contradict each other. If the axle is locked, the wheels are turning at the same speed.

    No.

When the Atrac senses the one wheel has slowed down by applying brakes (and wasting energy), and the wheels turn at the same speed, it releases the brakes.

    Thats what I said.

If the axle is locked, the Atrac cant work.

I think it's just a question of semantics. There is always some traction available to one wheel or another to different degrees. ATrac distributes the torque to the wheel(s) with traction in a moderated way. The more traction available, the more torque is made available to that wheel. Atrac is superior in some ways over a locker because it moderates wheel spin on all sides to help maintain steerage. As discussed earlier, you can loose steerage more easily with lockers. There is seldom a time off road when all the wheels have the same available traction. Lockers don't account for that difference.

Thanks! I made a copy of page 4 of the thread, shrunk it and taped it to the inside of my visor. 9 different modes! That's insane!

I drove all winter on ice and snow in 4H and had absolutely no problem at all. I think the tires helped a lot with this too. But also, I'm an old fart and don't drive fast in the ice or snow as some of the others around here do. I saw 8 other 4x4s off in ditches. As I have learned on this thread, just turning it to 4H means the VSC and TRAC are active so I guess it helped a ton. I could hardly tell I was driving on ice or snow to be honest. I played around in some parking lots, just for fun. But on the road, driving very safe speeds, I had no problems at all and I cannot say that about other 4x4s I've owned.

Sweers stated that they all have the same size gear, but that there is a flange on the locking differential that is being measured

I wish Toyota would stop calling their electronic brake-based traction control a 'Limited-slip differential'. An LSD is a clutch, viscous, or gear-based mechanical/electromechanical device that resists speed differences between the output shafts. Toyota's 'LSD' is just the brake-based traction control that is required by law on every new passenger vehicle sold in the U.S.

Unless you are driving at 10/10ths on a track, there isn't much practical difference between a mechanical LSD and the brake-based systems, but it's still an important distinction that every other automaker except Toyota makes. It's especially confusing since some prior-gen Tacos did offer a mechanical LSD at one time.

Ok I've read through all of this and am now more confused than I was before. I have a 2016 TRD OR but there is no A-trac button on it. I can hit the trac control button in 2wd and it shows the trac control indicator and says auto LSD. When I reach 30 MPH trac indicator turns off just the auto LSD light. Hold trac button for 3 seconds it says trac off. I just want a simple explanation of what my truck is trying to do in each setting. I understand the rear locker and the crawl control I just want to know what the vsc button does in each setting (2wd, 4wd, 4lo)

    I'm trying to figure out
If you put in an ARB rear locker in a trd sport, would you still get the LSD when not locked?

No. ARB replaces the entire differential carrier

It doesn't have a mechanical LSD, so the truck will continue to use the vacuum boosted brake system to control wheel spin whether the ARB locker is locked or unlocked. When it's locked, it will monitor for wheel spin but won't sense any due to the half shafts being locked together

I have a big question. Can I add the locking dif on a 16 TRD Sport? Like the same one off a 16 OR
