So what I'm getting from this is the Frontier with the disc brakes is great and the Tacoma with drum brakes is sh!t. And adding to that Toyota decided sh!t was good enough for the 2016 when it comes to brakes.

 

Probably tires. The Colorado is configured with the z71 which is their off road package. The maroney says it has "all-terrain" 17" tires but I have no idea what brand or type they are exactly. The Canyon is in their top selling package and it has "all-season" tires, again I don't know what kind exactly, i think they might have been 18 inch too.

The tests are supposed to be measuring the same performance metric but results are inconsistent between trials, so you can conclude whatever your heart desires because nothing in the data can prove you wrong. Science!

 

Agree ten four, drum brakes are simple, cheap and last a long damn time and can be adjusted in minutes. I've seen many rear drums go 100k before the innards need work. The fronts obviously wear out the fastest while the rears just kinda hang out out back and chill.
Only real fault to drum brakes is when they get wet, and I mean really wet. They have to be submerged underwater for awhile in order to get that bad but when they do, they don't work very well until they dry. Which again isn't an issue since 75% of your stopping power is provided by the front discs, which work well even when wet and dry fast.

These trucks aren't Porsches people, they don't require the stopping ability for high speeds and abuse like sports cars do. Only time discs would benefit all four wheels on a truck is if you turned it into a Baja trophy truck. For what most people on here use them for; daily driving, mall crawling, and light off roading, it's just overkill and a waste of money to convert the rear drums to disc brakes. They would still last a long time no doubt, but would cost more money to fix when they wore out than the drums would.

Holy thread revival. I think there is nothing wrong with the drums. They last longer and i have absolutely no complaints on stopping power.

On my previous truck, my original drums and shoes lasted 124k miles. Discs wont last that long.

 

that!!! they work well and they last forever, I never got the big issue here some see with them. Traded in the last taco(2011, same setup as the 2016) at just over 54k and they looked hardly worn, pads up front were still in good shape too.

 

I'm going to tape off roughly 1/4 of my drum and plastidip it red, then overlay a "brembo" decal over that. Maybe install some kind of clicker so that I know when my rear wheels are in the 2'oclock position before parking the truck to go admire it. Because that's really my only cause to complain about the drums - they don't look cool.

 

Only because most people never adjust them. They probably weren't even doing any of the stopping for their last 60k miles.....

 

When we were changing the drums and shoes, the shoes were right up against the drums. It was actually hard to remove. I have always done that hard reverse with parking brake on trick, seemed to work.
