Ok Gideon Levi and others with experience in 35's, I would like some opinions on something. Is there an advantage of running either a 16" or 17" wheel with a 315 on our trucks? As in does the extra inch of sidewall on a 16 help off-road or possibly the extra inch of wheel help with clearance of suspension/steering components? Or is it all a wash and doesn't matter?

I would like to hear your thoughts or possible links to information on arguments for one over another.

That is if you guys don't mind explaining or debating.

Awesome. Glad you can make it. We're actually staying in Oak Ridge now. It was cheaper and she'll be happier. I'll definitely get with you before the trip so we can get together up there.

As long as you get proper back spacing or wheel spacers to make up for it then it really comes down to preference. As much as I hate to say it, it seems like 17s have a more variety of tire choices than 16s.

Why do you hate to say that? It's the truth. But I have a great debate for this as I've thought of it before. I can't type it this second so I'll be back shortly

My truck has developed an awful clutch pedal squeak and yesterday the passenger leaf spring did the same. I'm about to use 5 gallons of wd40 on this thing it's annoying the shit out of me

You got someone else around you? If so, lay on the ground by the slave cylinder and get them to push the clutch in and out. If it's the slave cylinder squeaking then pull back the dust boot on the shaft and spray it with wd40. The noise may not go away immediately but it should soon. If its not the slave cylinder then listen under the dash for the squeak. If its under the dash then spray the clutch assembly with wd40

So completely throw out the fact that the wheels need to clearance on the vehicle. All things the same being exact same spec wheels, exact same spec tires and exact same psi with the only difference being one combo is a 16" wheel and one is a 17" wheel ......

A 16" wheel would provide more tire sidewall which will flatten out more creating a smoother ride (floating on more air), will cause more tire to form around things like rocks and tree roots and will provide you with more sidewall traction, because rubber is a lot better at getting traction off road then steel. This extra sidewall also makes the tire more susceptible to punctures because of all the things mentioned above. A smaller wheel could also be more structurally strong due to the fact that the gaps are more compact and the weight of the wheel is closer to the center of itself lessening leverage.

A 17" wheel will provide less tire sidewall which will lessen ride quality, the ability for the tire to form around objects and sidewall traction but will increase puncture resistence due to the above mentioned things. It could also be less structurally strong due to bigger holes and weight farther away from its center.

I have no way of proving any of this as I'm not a scientist, well, not licensed anyway. Haha I'm just pointing out what seems to be common sense things.

Having said all that, you have to account for the vehicle itself and possibly make a decision between the two because of clearance issues with brakes or suspension components. Tire options also may help make a decision as some tires aren't made for all size wheels.

But speaking purely for offroading, I would say that a 16" wheel with more tire is better then a 17" wheel with less tire. These differences are probably very miniscule and unnoticeable while off road but if there has to be a first and second place then the 16" wheel is first

I do not, I'm 90% sure it's under the dash though. Found the spring squeak too it's the rubber on the forward most clip around the leaf spring, passenger side

Ok. What are your thoughts on the two piece construction in steel wheels? Nothing to worry about or possibly an accident waiting to happen? I was thinking something like these wheels from summit.
    http://m.summitracing.com/parts/vsw-85h6883ns

Mainly because I don't really want to dump a bunch of money in to new wheels that I am probably just going to beat up. So don't want fancy ones, wish Wheelers still sold their steelies.

without the same amount of words that gideon used, youre going to have more options with 17's than 16's. And I would bet money anyone here could not drive two identical cars, 1 with 16s and the other 17s, and tell a difference. offroad is a semi-bumpy ride anyway, if you dont like it, stay on the hardball. Looking back, I wish I had 17s instead of 18s.

They are great wheels. Heavy but they are fantastic for trail riding. For reference these are the wheels I bought to be my next beadlock off road wheels .....

I want to point out 1 key thing though. There are more tire options in 36 and up. 35s though you can find any tire for a 16 or 17.
