I installed a new third in my truck a couple weeks ago. I was figuring it would need bigger tires to kinda make it tolerable after I finished but I knew for sure the 3.31 stock ratio wasn't going to work for me. A travel trailer is in my near future, and I tow a small boat and load with motorcycles weekly.

Stock I was stalling on uphill starts EMPTY and smelling clutch when backing into my barely sloped driveway with a 1000 lbs. total trailer/boat combo. Not good.

I was stuck between 3.73, 3.90 and 4.10... I am glad I went to the lower ratio in my sites.

I'm happy to report the new 4.10 and stock tiny wheels/tires are just fine. In fact, my MPG have stayed the same. a tank of mixed driving and up to 80 MPH actual speeds netted 23.5 and 24.5 MPG. If I can manage to stay below 65 I'm sure that can go up a bit.

The engine feels like it has been set free. It (relatively) leaps forward now with a bit of throttle. It was struggling badly before.

Stalling on uphill starts is a thing of the past. I can release the clutch with no gas pedal and the truck walks away at idle. Throttle response is absolutely transformed, the thing pulls now. It feels like it lost 1500 lbs. off the bare truck.

First is slightly short, but unless you are rolling at least 5 MPH, second is just a skootch too tall to start in. So, first gear start, then shift to second after you are at least rolling. Highway speeds to 80 MPH cruise are smooth and quiet. It'll pull 5th gear cleanly at around 1500 RPM/40 MPH on semi flat roads.

Stock it could comfortably cruise at 50 MPH in THIRD GEAR!!!

My local mountain road downhill was a death ride dragging 3rd gear stock, it would soar to over 50 MPH easily requiring heavy foot braking. Second gear was too short, and it would rev to the moon. With the 4.10s it holds the truck perfectly at around 35 MPH.

In short, it cost me $1035 and 2 hours on my back and was worth every cent and bit of wrenching. Why this truck isn't stock with this ratio I can't understand.

i've got a 4.10 third in my 5 lug as well (i've got 31's), but you're totally right. Should just build the cost of a new third into any new 5 lug. ooorrrr just save for a 4x4, but that's another thread.

JT, do you mind sharing what you paid for yours? I'm thinking this mod may be in my future as well and am wondering where people usually source their gears from.

Whatever the cost, forget the stock third as a core, it is only 3.31 ratio compatible. I tried to sell/give mine away as it was brand new. I ended up recycling the damn thing.

Another note for Toyota, if you must install crazy tall gears for some reason, use the 3.52 in both the stick and auto trucks so we can rebuild the OEM third!!! So STUPID.

I coulda done this job locally for about half the cost if my third could accept lower ratio gears.

Did you correct the speedometer? If so, how do you change it?

No, it reads high by 2-3 MPH at 70 so easy enough to remember. I'll probably get slightly taller tires when these wear out and that should be close enough.

Yeah no problem. I got mine from another TW member for $400 i think? Maybe $450. Installed it with a buddy, super easy if you've got the tools. Just bolts on, lots of write ups on TW.

I ended up with 4.88s, a Detroit True Trac locker, 30x 9.5 -15 tires and she drive great. It's actuall fun to rev it out now. Shifting point went from max 3000 to freely spinning to 4500 without the horrible strain it seemed to suffer with stock gears and the 4.10 and the 30" tires.

The engine used to feel thrashy, now it friggin zips!

    It is actually quick now!

Don't fear the gear! I always err to the lower ratio when trying to decide.

The locker is pretty great, no wheel spin at all on rain soaked streets. I drove thru and stopped in 8" of unplowed snow with ice under it. No problem.

If I get stuck now, I'll deserve it.

Nice! Good to hear the locker is working well for you. I can't wait to ditch the stockers I'm currently running :)

So you were not able to buy just a 4.88 rack and pinion , and bearing for like 275.00 from ecgc and just swap out R&P . and keep the old stuff . i tow every day and its a pain and im trying to find what i need to buy to sort the issue.

To be honest, setting up the back lash and everything isn't my speciality and rather than do it over and over and even then not being sure it's perfect, the cost of a build third was a bargain.

Oh, and if you have a 3.31, no other ratios fit that third, so you can't rebuild it with gears even if you wanted to.

Still loving my 4.88 and 31x10.5 tire combo. Towed the fishing boat 500 miles last week at around 1,000 lbs and couldn't even feel it.

Does this mean you can't re-gear the auto?

If you have 3.31 it does. I went to east coast gear.com gave them my Vin they confirmed I had 3.31. So I had to buy complete 3rd member. He said 3.73 and up you could change gears. I went with 4.56 and an arb locker, I have 29" tire. No lift yet. But wanted to be able to get bigger tire next time by then I will have lift. Gearing was prioty over everything else. Will see how much better it is after I change it. Fingers crossed.

Ive Driven mine now. 4 months . it is a little quicker but you have to shift more sooner. At 3000rpm is were you feel the torq. it will coast in idle and up some inclines as it would just stall in stock gear . at 70mph im 3300 rpm,80mph pushing 4000. running 235/70/16 bfg ko tire . BUT THE MOST DISAPPOINTING THING WAS IN DAILY DRIVING AT 60 IN 5TH GEAR I LOST 12MPG IN FUEL . Before the gear change my commute to town i got 30mpg at 60mph in 5th . Now i get 18mpg. i can tow a heavy trailer now . with no more stalling and stinky clutch that was my main goal . so i had to sacrifice mpg. It is 4.56 with arb locker
