I have read several discussions and have been apart of many topics, but I want to talk about this VVT-i. When does this valve kick in and what can we do to adjust it after a couple of air MODS?

An earlier response would likely come in handy, after a CAI and Split-tail exhaust upgrades. Im also giving headers some serious thought, but since I have her breathing better; im thinking of the next step.

Not much talk of this VVT-i, though. Lets hear what you guys have to say!

    VVT-I isn't V-Tech. It doesn't 'Kick in'.

It's constantly on with regard to how heavy your right foot is and will continually compensate by either retarding or advancing the timing of the valves. Hence, VVT.

OK, so its always on? & so that means what? what are the benefits? ARE THERE WAYS OF ADJUSTING IT?
Can someone give me a response that I can learn or benefit from? I really dont know what these guys are trying to say, besides...V tech is cool

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
VVT-i adjusts the intake valve timing. You cannot adjust it. It is done by the ECU. There is a hydraulic valve that controls fluid flow to the intake cam position. Altering the timing allows the valves to open at different times in relation to the stroke of the piston and the exhaust valves.

VVT-i is sort of like the best of both cam worlds, you can have a high hp, high rpm cam and a high torque, at low rpm cam on the same camshaft. It basically is the same as Honda's VTEC. Interesting fact it was actually Ferrari who originally used variable valve technology, way back in the mid 1980's!

    You doth partake in necromancy!

Realistically, it never was explained properly. So my personal opinion is that it is a worthy revival.

Okay, so the is the inside of a VVT actuator:
    VVTi image.jpg
(not a toyota, just the first good picture I could find)

This allows the ability to adjust the timing of the camshaft + or - a set number of degrees. More advanced timing creates power, and more retarded timing reduces the power and saves gas. It is controlled by oil pressure regulated by this:
    VVTi solenoid image.jpg
This is a Toyota oil control valve. It is controlled by the ECU to achieve a set number of values to satisfy the tune.

    Hope this helps

People's needs and truck problems are pretty much constant, there is no expiration date on helpfulness, if there was then there would be no point of this site. How silly to think everyone has the same problems at the same time.

I was wondering about the guy where the Dealer forgot to put Oil in during his service, I would imagine the VVT system also got messed up.

Meant no offence, your post came across as sarcastic (being that it was never really explained until @MrCrowntown explained it....)

No way, I Love this site because of all the knowledge you guys convey- because to me, even a little bit of info is a Lot!! I always say engine savvy/mechanical men are so much like Dr.s. Dealing with the intricate motor is so complex and every little detail is so critical, they don't nearly get the credit they/you deserve. I Never cease to be impressed. No bullsh*t here, nor offense taken. Was just stating a fact Iam certain of, which doesn't happen much at all here :)
I won't be joining in with any engine help, that's for sure!

    It is self adjusting.
If you modded your intake and exhaust, then the computer theoreticaly is already compensating by changing the valve opening , timing, ignition and such.
