I think 295s will be a good compromise between the 285 and 315. If I go any bigger then 295 couple well know company say I will have to regear for power and won't have enough travel in my suspension on the top end. 295's will fit with out modification supposedly.

Anyone know of any wheeling up by Silver Lake (Kirkwood)? Supposed to go to a cabin up there and it would be cool to check it a trail or two.

I know there are plenty of fire roads out that way.. Maybe forestry station will have a map... Sometimes they give them out and sometimes they don't..

There's the fire road by Red Lake, lots of scenery and fun. Used to snowboard up there on a big patch until July! I dropped a pin on the entrance off 88 at the lake in the pic.

A bit more of a drive is Barney Riley Trail, I haven't done it yet but it's about 10 mi in 10 mi out with natural hot springs on the Carson river. It starts off of hwy 89 in Markleeville.

I'll have to check that out. Won't have the kid so I'll have some more freedom, although alcohol might get in the way.

Thanks a lot, that really helps. I've never been up that way so I had no clue what was around. Might be worth it to take my 4Runner.

Alabama! Just moved here from the bay.

I experienced power loss but don't really see the need to re gear and mpgs haven't suffered much. I needed to do a good amount of trimming along with spacers but it's a first gen.

This. There's tons of fire roads. Check out blue lakes, there's a decent back trail right near Kirkwood that will drop you at the upper lakes. The upper portion of deer valley starts from the lower lakes, it's short if you can't cross the river, might still be closed, but it's a nice place to have lunch. If you want more info pm me.

Glad to help! That trail on the map is a loop that goes back to Blue lakes.. It's been a while since I've done it so I'm not sure what it's like right now.

Another one is at the intersection of 89 and 88 (picketts junction closer to Sorenson's). From what found there's a few offshoots and haven't fully explored it. Last time I was there we just parked and hiked in the woods w the dogs.

That's the trail that takes you to blue lakes. Not difficult, seen stock vehicles up there.

I was there last summer, you'd need a truck to get through, 4wd possibly if you go from 88. Blue lakes is paved

Totally doable in a stock 4x4, took my 07 through that trail several times. Nice scenery, a couple of nice lakes between red & blue lakes. Google Earth calls it Forestdale Road, it loosely follows the pacific crest trail through that area.

Back west on 88 is Bear River Res. I spent a day exploring that way there's a bunch of fire roads, and it'll take you back to salt springs res. Good fishing out there, lots of fire roads as far as I could tell.

Also the slabs off of North South (Mormon Emigrant Trail) are probably only 45 minutes from Kirkwood, maybe an hour.

    Some really cool shit
I was up there in the spring and was told that a good 4 wheel drive trail starts at the gate where the word "Cow" is on the third slide. The road is opposite of Caples Lake. The second picture shows the Cal Trans yard. Follow the road around the yard and continue to the gate. If the gates is closed you can still drive right around it in 4 wheel drive. Guess the gate stops the two wheel drive folks.
