Inferior in heat dissipation, but superior in longevity and weather proofing. Let's not forget too that it's not like companies are throwing massive 4 piston calipers on the back of small trucks. If anything Colorado is using the same puny rear discs as the Malibu and Equinox, which aren't much of an improvement.

Anyways, I go back to the point that hopefully Monday will tell all. If this Tacoma stops faster than the last truck and similarly to the Colorado, who cares if Toyota saved a few bucks using drums in the rears?

 

I don't understand the " F1 cars have disks so my Tacoma needs disks " argument

F1 brakes are all carbon fibre too and I doubt a Tacoma needs to decelerate from 300kmh to 80 kmh in 100m at about 5G to the driver

And because a disc brake is self cleaning, it doesn't need to be weather proof. All my disc equipped off road toys stop incredibly well in rain and mud compared to a drum does.

Regarding life, I got 100k miles out of the front pads and rotors on my 07 Colorado Z71. I had to change my first set of shoes at 45k miles, and again at 90k miles with new drums and hardware. Everything I've had with discs has been less of a headache than the drums I've had, especially when servicing them.

Honestly a floating 1 or 2 piston caliper setup with a disc that will fit under a 16" rim would be great on the back of a Tacoma.

The 2016 Colorado stops faster than a 2015 Tacoma, but the 2016 Tacoma will be lighter and the rear brakes have been redesigned. Also the ABS system has been played with, including a different vacuum booster.

I eat rotors all the time in my Ram because of rocks from gravel. Road salt and sand getting into the brake also cause excessive wear.

I've never got more than 40K-50K out of disc brakes up front, and usually I need new rotors in the back at the same time for reasons noted above. Then again I go offroad every day, do field work with both trucks, and don't live in a large city. That right there could be the difference.

2015 mid size stopping distance. How is this still an argument? The Taco is the worst in the class.

Land Cruiser has rear discs, 4runner has rear discs, FJ Cruiser has rear discs... Just saying.

 

Stopping distance is more a function of tire tread/compound than what kind of brakes it has. As long as the breaks can lock up both the front and rear axle. Which I find hard to believe any car on the road can't do.

Regarding life, everything is relative...but on everything I've owned I get about double the life of rear brakes than the front brakes...and big suprise, i've replaced more fronts than rears...and mostly disks...

Thats a history of 2 FJ40's, Landrover Defender, Ford Sierra, BMW M3, Pontiac GTO/Monaro, 7 different El Caminos, Datsun 200sx, Chevy Caprice, suburban, jeep cherokee, first gen tacoma... replacing disks always more expensive than drums. Turning disks or drums always been a waste ive learned.

 

Sadly my initial guess is the Tacoma will still not stop as well as the twins do.

Comparing to a full size is also not a good comparison regarding maintenance life of brakes. My F350 work truck eats brakes regularly, but it also stops a 15k pound trailer easy.

Not sure how you're getting so much junk in your brakes either.

How do you manage this ? Calipers are mounted behind wheel center, so anything falling on rotor will get pushed up and away from rotors and pads.
The only way to get gravel inside would be to have gravel that floats upward or driving only backwards.
Also drums are not weather proof. there is 1/4 inch space around the edge for air to get in and cool the pads. Problem with that design is that things get in but will not get out, they just get grinded inside.

I didn't see anywhere in that test that they say they used the same tires. Only the same portion of a track.

Rocks kicked up from the front tires can end up going into the rear tire rims, from there it's just bad luck. Call any dealer in Southern Alberta who sells trucks and he'll agree that the rear rotors will get destroyed on gravel here. It's just a fact of life if you do a lot of gravel driving.

You hear it right away when it happens, back up to kick the rock out, but still the damage is done. I don't tow much with my Ram 2500, I use it mostly for the payload for a soil sampler, and at 60 K I need new brakes again .

As for the drums I've never had a problem. There was a good video on here showing how, in the Canadian climate, several reviewers from Motoring (a Canadian Auto Show) felt that the drums were superior for longevity gives the salt, sand, and other weather related grit on our roads. Maybe they were wrong. Who knows. Drums just seem to hold up for me.

BTW the fronts should definitely be the biggest disc brakes you can fit on a truck. I'm not debating that discs aren't better than drums from strictly a brake force point of view. I had a pop can get lodged in the front rotor once years ago on my old F150, but that was probably some idiot kid and had nothing to do with driving.

 

They are all using comparable, budget minded tires on the vehicles. If it were a small difference, I'd chalk it up to tires and conditions, but it was 22 feet. Well outside any discrepancy tires would make.

Just realized in that test they compared the TRD Pro, so I get why that particular truck stopped worse given its lift and maybe larger tires than the Frontier Pro 4X. Not sure what size that comes with.

 

Disagree. Tires make all the difference in the world. A person that knows cars and specifically knows racecars would know that.

They were using the tires that came on the truck OEM.
