for over a month I have been trying to find a whistling sound on my v6 3.4 engine. it has been doing it ever since I got it and from what I read on other forums its a common issue with our trucks.

I have a strange whistle sound from my 3.4 v6 taco every time it accelerates or is under load such as going up a slop or up an incline. it has been doing it ever since I had it and as soon as the engine unloads / coasts the whistle stops.

it is not terribly loud but loud enough that you always hear it unless you turn up the radio very loud. it is a high pitch whistle much like the sound of a jet engine you hear off in the distance getting ready to take off when you are at the airport.

near as I can tell it only happens with the Toyota Tacoma with the 3.4 v6 engines and im pretty sure its not intake related because I tried driving with the air filter door flap open and then even without an air filter in it, but it didn't change the whistle noise at all so im guessing it must something with the exhaust system maybe???

it doesn't do it much at all at lower speeds but it does do it when you first pull out onto the road from a stop and when you are on the road its constantly doing it when you are cruising at 70 mph unless the wind is at your back or you are going down hill.

I have seen many others talking about having this exact very same whistle sound from their v6 trucks on other forums as well so its not just my truck doing this but no one on any forum I have read has figured out what it is or how to stop this noise.

its driving me frickin nuts :annoyed:

anyone know whats doing it and the fix for it?

hell, if I knew what it was doing it, I could at least cover it with a wrap to stop the noise if it was a design issue.

Maybe you have a vacuum leak in the intake tubing somewhere. It could be something like a small crack or bad connection that opens up when the engine is under load and creates a vacuum leak.

    Just an idea

it would be a nice tool to have but I cant afford that for a once in a lifetime use but it would be nice to have one just for the cool toy factor

anything is possible but sooonas I got the truck I did a tune up and I have made sure all the vacuum lines and hoses were all good so ... :notsure:
i'll have to do a video clip is best I can do but I don't know how well it would work since its not a loud noise, just one of those nails on a chaulk board pitch type things that strikes a nerve[/QUOTE]

a whistle under load at half or less throttle is more than likely intake noise. There was a guy on here about a month ago that had a strange whistling noise that turned out to be the walker exhaust he was running.

if you had a gopro or a camera that can be easily mounted to different places you could record sound at different places to try and find source.

door seals are ok, windows are sealed, its coming from under the hood or firewall area by the engine.

even with windows rolled down its the same noise

plus I see dozens of posts on other forums about this same noise so ....

does it change pitch/volume with changes in rpm or does it just stay constant once it starts making noise?

Check your carrier bearing and u-joints, that sounds travels up and forward sometimes.

yes it gets louder or quieter with the amount of pedal you push. when you lift the pedal it stops completely, push the pedal it starts again.

I don't know how else to explain it but when the engine is pushing the truck it whistles and when it coasts or "unloads" at a regular cruise speed it doesn't make the noise but if you are driving into a head wind where it has to push, then it whistles constantly the whole time and that's when my head wants to explode.

its not a squeal or screech or metal sound, its like a kids plastic whistle
