    dating myself....I recall in grade school we were learning the metric system under (what seemed to a 7 yr old) the threat of violence and woe if we didn't figure it out. Anybody else remember an 80's era Big 3 auto with metric AND imperial fasteners under the same hood? We all know how that went.

    Years later as a machinist/tool maker doing fab/stamping work (voodoo content) for domestic and European clients, it became woefully evident how lame the imperial system is.

    Spent almost my entire schooling learning everything in metric only to get to industry and nobody knew what a Joule or a Newton was. It's a much more user-friendly/logical system.

    My Span Table Book shows both , front half of the book in imperial , second half of the book is the same tables in metric

    After much deliberation, I think I'm going to seek out pricing for laser cutting rather than plasma. I just don't like the way our plasma table cuts aluminum.

    In the end it will be a better product.

    Okay fella's, here's the deal:

    Laser cutting is going to be too expensive, driving the price past $300.

    I like how our plasma table cuts steel, but not aluminum, soooo.........this rack is going to be STEEL (because steel is real).

    It will be heavier, but material is cheaper. I'm going to reduce the price by $25, so even with increased shipping costs, it will be a wash to you.

    It will still be powder coated, so no need to worry about corrosion.

    Steel is stronger than aluminum, so that's a big advantage.

    Everyone good with that?

    You are correct sir. For anyone bolting heavy jacks and what not to it, steel is much better.

    The weight goes from about 12 pounds to about 32. Shipping cost isn't totally driven by weight (size has something to do with it as well), so the price to get it to your door won't go up that much.

    My powder coat guy has got it goin' on, so corrosion won't be an issue for anyone.

    I had an 1981 F250 that had SAE and metric fasteners. It appears ford was in a snit because they were forced to move to metric. There were bolts with 18mm heads. No european of japanese fasteners ever had 18mm heads, some wrench sets don't include that size. It's like they wanted to take it out on the customer.

    Steel is what you want. The very small amount of extra weight is a small price to pay for material that is three times stronger.

    Hrm, aluminum would be nice. What about a waterjet option? Have you looked into that as opposed to laser or plasma?
