Please keep in mind that that was a 2002. 14 years later we should be seeing a jump greater then 7mpg. Gas 14 years ago was how much... Well under $1.50 the idea that Toyota is going to get the 4x4 mpgs the same as the 2.7L this wouldn't be as big of an issue with me If the power was there. Fords eco boost provides a ton more power and results in the same mpgs. I wouldn't be so worried about the GM twins taking portions of the Tacoma market as I would be with the new F150 securing those who are not brand loyal or are on the fence. Just my .02 not trying to start an conflicts:)

The 2.7 is traditional. Actually. It's the same 2.7 that has always existed (and I have).

The V6 changed. The MPG being quoted is for the 2.7. So it's largely irrelevant.

I think 33% better mpg in 11 years (last gen 1 Tacoma) is amazing considering how long the gasoline motor has been in use. Gas prices aren't too relevant to this. Gas has always gone up and down. Heck, it's supposed to be at $2/gal soon in the states. The gen 3 Tacoma will weight substantially more than the gen 1 (safety equiptment etc) and it gets 33% better mpg with gobs more power. That is good. Automakers aren't going to blow their wad and release their cutting edge efficiency technology at every new release. They gotta save some tricks for the next gen and keep costs low enough for the consumer.
Toyota knows they could easily stuff a hybrid in the Tacoma and get 30 mpg, the problem is, why? Doesn't make sense. Gas is cheap enough and CAFE targets are in sight for Toyota.

I get the feeling Toyota doesn't care what all of us think. They are going to release the specs for good or for bad and people are going to gobble them up like they always have. I live in Utah and 50% of the vehicles on the road are either Camry's or Tacomas

You are right. Toyota will sell every gen 3 Tacoma they produce. They really have the upper hand here.

IMHO, the F-150 2.7L Eco is Toyota's biggest threat. The GM twins are junk. When there is very little cost difference (purchase price, not MSRP) between the two and the F-150 offers gobs more power, more basic features, and more MPG(?) they could easily lose market share. I'm either getting a Taco or F-150 for my next vehicle. But it will be a year or so.

I don't think the 2.7L is a threat. The mid-size market is still expanding. There will be cross-shopping for sure. Seen a few guys on this forum with F-150's who want to trade for a Tacoma so it varies greatly. I don't think Toyota is ready to commit to turbo-charging because their main priority is QDR.

Couldn't agree more. Unless the Tacoma boasts something incredible I will end up jumping ship of my 13 at the end of the year for a new f150.

I wonder if a North American Ford Ranger with a 2.7 eco wouldn't force Toyota's hand a little more? (Not like it will happen anyway)

Rumored to be an f100 to make return. I know the f150 will be outfitted with a possible small powerstroke

What research do you have that the twins are "junk"? Or is it you just don't like GM? The 3.6L in the GM twins has been around alot longer than the new 2.7L ecopoop, if anything is junk its that. Full size GM truck truck sales haven't dropped off since the GM twins release, if anything they have increased. Very different market, the full vs mid size. The Toyota Tacoma's biggest threat is definitely the GM twins, especially the 2016 model with the diesel option. Im not a huge fan of that VM shitori motor but it'll sell.

Not exactly a car guy crowd, or ones with insider EPA info. Likely some free lance blogger has just recompiled random data.

I have as much confidence in their auto information as I do Consumer Reports writing on performance tires. ;)

When it shows up on http://www.fueleconomy.gov/ then we'll have something to talk about. I did notice today that there are a whole bunch more '16 Toyota models showing there than there was last week, so it might be getting closer.

MPG #'s will be out before they are posted on the EPA website.

Government Motors... Enough said :bananadead: with that being said my father had a GM truck and at 20k miles the paint started to peel and chip off the truck going down the road. They refused to fix or warranty the truck so he sold it on the spot for a loss and got a corolla. That's why I would never buy a gm. Screw me once shame on you, screw me twice shame on me.

Around here you can get in to a Silverado or Sierra for the same price as the midsize twins. Plus that 3.6 gets no better fuel economy than the full size V8s. Will have to see how the diesel goes. Dodges FIAT diesel is keeping mechanics busy.
