So I swapped out the wheel bearings with the excellent quality hubs from Kevin on the forums here. Removal was a little tough due to rust, but installation was easy.

I did both sides and went for a test drive and the hum is definitely gone but I've got this symptom that I don't know what it is. If I start slowly and lightly press the brakes - I hear a pop on each front wheel. I then put it in reverse and roll back 5 or 10 feet and lightly press the brake and another pop on each side. I'm thinking and hoping it's something to do with the callipers and rotors and not driveline related. I went for a high speed road test and everything seemed fine. Anyone got any ideas - hopefully.

Calipers are tight. Brake pad shift sounds probable because it only happens when I go from forward to reverse and forward and reverse repeatedly. So the question is.... How to fix brake pad shift?

Alot of times, u cant. U can just lessen the noise. Remove the brake pads and relube the contact points where they meet the calipers...

    Thanks lotsoftoys.

I'll pull the calipers off tomorrow and clean them up. Hopefully it will help. Sucks when you fix one problem and another shows up. Likely the first time the calipers have been off in 160000km. New to me though.

Hopefully it's just that. I was really freaked out that it was front diff or cv joint problems. Here's to hoping not!

What should I lubricate them with?

Go to the autoparTs store. They have special brake grease made to withstand the heat. Good luck!
