3rd Gen Concerns

You seem to have developed a picture in your head of what I am and what I know that bears no resemblance to reality. If you think I get my information from sales brochures, you are wrong. If you think I don't understand anything about brake pads and tire composition, you are wrong. I am not asking to retrofit rice to the truck; I am asking that it come with basic modern technology as standard, which is the exact opposite. And I have experienced fade in a my previous Gen 2 Tacoma on windy downhills with a load in the truck, so you're wrong there too.

Your ranting, misguided assumptions, and off-topic complaining about people's tire purchases does nothing to reinforce your points. And if you think that disc brakes are too complicated and expensive for a vehicle costing as much as a Tacoma, I don't know what to say.

The issue is not whether Tacoma drum brakes will lock up once. The issue is whether they will be able to have sufficient braking power at the end of a long winding downhill, especially when towing. They don't. That is a safety limitation that we accept in old vehicles, but shouldn't have to accept in new ones.

Lest you think I sit at home fantasizing about new technology - I own a 1960's Datsun Roadster, which I rally regularly. And yes, the drums are converted to discs, because the drums faded on windy roads and on track. Still, I accept that a 1960's vehicle has some limitations that I need to drive around. I don't accept that a $38K vehicle in 2015 should rely on drums.

But feel free to rant and carry on about the youth today and whatever other bogeyman are in your head. Just don't imply that those stereotypes have anything to do with me.

 

Swap out to EBC slotted rotors and yellow EBC pads on the front. It will eliminate your issues.

So what you saying despite all the data behind the advantages of Disc brakes, I should listen to @archerm3. Same guy who thinks NASA grade simulator is a video game, Ph. D. are people who could not get job anywhere else, and He can't read a paper and review where data included in that paper came from.
Instead he tells me that I don't need rear disc brakes on a truck that I know of has brake problems already.

NASA grade? That reminds me of the whole "military grade" badge that everyone throws on materials these days. What a joke. It's still a computer simulation. Neither of you know how good or bad that data is unless you were involved in the testing and know every single control that was implemented in the experiment.

So BlueT do you have data tying the ABS issues to the rear drums? Other than something coincidental like saying "it's because rear drums"?

Nope, if I had scientific proof lawyers would love to have it because thats every accident of Tacoma truck being potential lawsuit against Toyota. It would have been bigger than GM ignition fiasco.
I swapped ABS unit and master cylinder from another truck and it did exactly the same thing in Tacoma. (ABS trying to kill you on down hill) There is nothing else left to try it except swap drums for discs.

 

What are you talking about? How is the ABS trying yo kill you on downhill?

I have ABS disabled for winters but would rather get that crap fixed.

 

Well I didn't think anybody would be interested .. there is no benefit to it. You just getting the same unit you had from another Toyota model.

 

The 3rd generation has a updated braking system even though its still a drum brake.
Wait till Aug 17 and see the test reports.
Have you tried using winter tires?
I didn't read all 104 pages of the post but from what I saw a lot of people were driving too fast for conditions and slid. Blaming ABS for not being able to stop.

 

Tires were never an issue with this. You can get that crazy ABS behavior in winter and on gorgeous summer day with little sand on the bottom of the exit ramp.
Problem with ABS is not that jumps in, its that jumps in in times where your absolutely would not expect, and disables your brakes instead of just controlling a wheel that slips.
It has nothing to do with speed either, it actually often happens at super low speeds (1-10MPH) which is weirder since most of the cars don't have ABS kick in at that speed.

 

Any update on the 3rd gen discussion?
