Stereo Upgrade BASIC How To... (2nd Gen)

Good to know that removing the HU is the same in 2013 as I will be pulling my 2014 head unit to add an amplifier very soon. What I am hoping to do is find a small enough amp to fit behind the head unit. Has anyone done this?

 

in the middle of replacing my stock unit with double din pioneer unit I just removed my stock unit and there was 3 wire connector to the stock unit
anyone know what the 3rd one is for? only has three wire to connector

 

x2. Had the same problem when I looked to hook up my BOSS double din. Pretty sure its for an amp but not 100% sure, can anyone verify?

i have a 2015 taco i purchased a entune audio plus with navi from fltrucks. i did the swap this morning before work. everything seems to be working (havent tried the mic) but the top row connections is missing a plug and i have a connector that doesnt have a home not sure if i need a adapter or if they just dont go together. ive been looking online for the pass 2hours trying to find the information for the plug ins on the audio navi any chances you can help me out? thanks

 

Just wanted to say thanks for this thread! Bought a DD Pioneer AVH-X5700BHS and all the necessary parts (steering wheel controls, micro bypass), and installing it was a breeze with the help of this thread and some instructions from crutchfield.

 

Will this stereo work on generation 2? It was taken from a 2013.

It looks like the emergency flasher switch, clock, passenger air bag lights are part of the stock radio. Can I upgrade to a new system and some how keep the original flasher switch, clock and pass air bag lights etc?

hey I got a question about installing double din dvd player in 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Behind the stock deck there are 4 plastic clips. does a wiring harness connect to these clips and crimped to another wiring harness on the new deck?

 

You can purchase a wiring harness from most major electronic or automotive stores.

 

you will still have to connect the radio harness wires to the factory adapter harness since both of them have wire leads.

 

Well you could also purchase a special wiring hardness like I did for my Kenwood KDC-X998 to the Toyota harness, much simpler, just need to find out if one is made for your head unit. You are likely to still need some additional wiring if you have steering wheel controls and an additional amplifier.

 

I am going to purchase a set of Hybrid Audio Unity speakers from the group buy. I don't know the first thing about speakers and amps and those things. My question is do I NEED an amp. I understand that I may not get the absolute most out of the speakers without the extra power but they will still sound really good just swapping them in, right? I don't plan on adding a subwoofer. Thanks

 

No, you don't need an amp. Music will still come out if the new speakers but they won't be at their full potential. They will be be better then the stock ones...

 

To be honest, using the factory radio isn't a bad idea but you may find out that the factory speakers may have a better tone because when they design a car/truck, they take into account acoustics to some extent and match components and tweak the radio to make it sounds good. You might notice that there is more BASS when the volume level is lower and then it drops off as you turn up the volume. I replaced my speakers and added and AMP to my factory radio and the issue was there. The only way to get rid of the issue was to replace my factory radio with an aftermarket one.

 

So I just finished installing a new head unit (Pioneer AVH-X5700BHS) in my truck with stock speakers. I was looking at replacing the speakers as soon as I could replenish my bank account but honestly, the sound is really very good with just the new stereo. It is light years better than before. I can't tell you how much better it sounds, it's fantastic. Go with a new head unit and see what that does for you.

 

I've been thinking about doing a complete overhaul on my 2012...but honestly, I don't hate the sound...your post is from August, so I'm wondering if, first everything is stock, except the head unit, and second, you are still content with it?

 

As far as I know the speakers are stock (and everything else but the head unit). I bought the truck used and have not opened the door panels to look, but if they are aftermarket speakers they are not the best.

That being said - yes I am very satisfied with the setup as is, with the disclaimer that I don't like systems that rattle the paint off the door panels or cost more than the truck itself. I'm mostly satisfied with good sound at a medium volume. The integrated cell phone function works well and having the caller's voice come through the speakers is good. I've been told the sound on the other end is tinny, so I'd like to upgrade the microphone someday.

If I were to do it over again I would do the same thing...
