When I lived in Sedona you could pick up a "Red Rock Pass" at the local Bashas supermarket. For camping I'm not sure, but you could google Red Rock Pass and start there.

That was a great report. My mom actually lives in Needles so I guess I can stop by after the trip and take the boat out. Those are the trips that made me want to get my truck this past month. You mentioned twice you used your rear locker, do you think my TRD Sport will get through terrain you encountered. The only thing I plan on doing is changing out my tires for more capable one like the KO2s.

The Red Rock Pass can be bought easily in town or online. The campgrounds in the area fill fast and most accept reservations. There is plenty of National Forest land nearby to dispersed camp for free.

15TrdSportec, any 4x4 Tacoma can do the Sedona trails but a little lift is nice as you may rub front/rear bumpers. A locker is bonus.

Not sure why I didn't get alerts on this post, so sorry about not responding!

You pay when you arrive at the gate. Nothing else is needed.

Do it! It's an amazing way to experience that part of Arizona.

    285/75R16

    Thanks!

It's best to call to get direct information. They should be able to steer you in the right direction depending on where you plan on camping, etc.

Yup, the Red Rock Pass will be needed for exploring around Sedona. They were available at multiple locations so finding one shouldn't be a problem.

I use the rear locker rather then engage 4wd for most driving. I'd say a stock 4wd w/o rear locker would have zero issues.

Yup! I'm not one for campgrounds, so I always try and find the dispersed camping areas.

    Thanks!

That tripped looked amazing! do you have a build thread? I want to do a trip like yours but want to see if my truck is capable first. Also, I backpacked into havasupai before but have never camped on the rim in havasupai tribal land, do you have a link with more information on where the location is?

    Thanks!

    Glad you enjoyed it.

I don't have a build thread, but may start one as I've had a lot of people ask about details of the truck. A stock 4wd Tacoma with some All-Terrain tires would have no problems.

You can look up Havasupai Point, there's quite a bit of info on it from various websites.

Sounds good. Did you have to make reservations for all the camping spots you did or were you able to just drive up and camp?

In Sedona we didn't as the areas we stayed were open to dispersed camping.

At the Grand Canyon you're supposed to reserve a backcountry pass before venturing out there.

Was trying to get a backcountry permit for Havasupai Point and I was told there is no camping there. They directed me to Ruby Point. Was this were you were camping?

So I called the NPS and spoke to a lady, she says yes you need a backcountry permit AND that you are not allowed to camp at Havasupai Point at all, you have to go to Ruby Point.

I explained to her that I've seen more than a few trip reports about HP, showing people camping right off the side of the canyon and she says they are not allowed to do that.

    Weird.

I forget her name already, but she's at 928-638-7875 if you'd like to talk to her.

This has been brought up quite a bit since posting this trip here and other forums.

AFAIK, after further research, camping at Havasupai Point is NOT allowed. There are a few posted sites that are allowed just prior to reaching the point though, and have equally fantastic views.

When asked how long we were going to be at the point by the Tribal Reservation worker, he did not raise any alarm by saying we'd be there over night. I also highly doubt a Ranger would make it all the way out there to check.

    YMMV.

Yes. I researched it. From what I found is that there is no camping at Havasupai point, but you like you said no one will be out there to check and lot of people do it. You drive though the Havasupai Indian Tribal ground to get to the point, but the point is actually on Grand Canyon National Park ground so a permit is required. But, no one will check and I don't believe the person at the gate cares.

I got a permit for Ruby Point which is just before Havasupai Point for this December. I am hoping that I get lucky and there is no storm before I get there and while I am there.

While the chances are very low that a Ranger would make it that far out, I can only imagine the fine/trouble you'd be in if they did...

Ruby point is amazing as well. Go check out Havasupai, take in the view, then setup camp without worry all while enjoying another awesome view.

    Have fun!

Saw cattle, rabbits and birds. No big mammals though.
