I'm on the fence about these. I have a question.
Are these speakers really as good as everyone thinks they are?

The Mirus Stage I and the Imagine Stage II, at the least, still have paper woofers. With everyone else running some sort of composite material for the woofer cones I would think that a higher quality speaker would too.

The Imagine Stage II are convertible from Coaxial to Component. Once again I would think that at that price increase you would get a dedicated Component setup. Yes there is versatility for those that don't want to or can't find a place for a separate tweeter.

Edit: I don't care about no external crossover. I actually think that makes sense and I don't have to find a place to mount it.

I sell these speakers so I could be perceived as being biased which is why I asked that those not familiar check all the reviews from people who already spent their hard earned dough on them!

It appears you may have a misconception about why other companies use all those different composite materials and why Hybrid Audio Technologies uses a proprietary paper cone in ALL of their speaker lines. Below is a copy of Hybrid Audio Technologies design philosophy that offers a bit of insight (the "diaphragms" mentioned are the cones) and the proof is in the pudding with all of the positive reviews out there including one from Car Audio and Electronics magazine where they stated the Clarus was "one of the finest component sets ever tested at any cost in the past twenty years of the magazine’s review of car audio products".

The Mirus is intended to be a very cost effective entry level "drop in" OEM replacement speaker that "still" shares the proprietary paper cone design of the higher priced levels (I also typically use them for rear fill) while the Imagine is a versatile "step up" from there with performance enhancements "for the discerning consumer interested in more than just an ‘OEM replacement speaker" that can now be purchased as a dedicated coaxial or as a convertible set.

    From Hybrid Audio Technologies:

»»» Super wide-bandwidth operation. »Hybrid Audio Technologies designs ensure that the midbass or midrange in each component system effectively reproduce an extremely wide bandwidth, exceeding six or more octaves. Of particular importance is the ability of Hybrid Audio Technologies drivers to operate within the bandwidth of the human vocal range, ensuring point-source tonality, and phase-coherent imaging and staging due to a single point-source. »

»»» Proprietary blend diaphragms with virtually negligible cone break-up. »Of particular notability in the Hybrid Audio Technologies line-up is the use of proprietary paper blends for all midrange and midbass diaphragms. Paper is widely acknowledged as the best-damping material , as it provides the near optimum balance of strength and weight. This topology also ensures soft, almost negligible cone break-up modes (distortions) being emanated from the diaphragm.

»» Good power handling without manifesting extreme power compression over the usable bandwidth. »All Hybrid Audio Technologies designs allow for use in extremely highpower applications without readily manifesting power compression and boast high nominal and thermal power handling. » »»» Extremely light moving mass for exceptional impulse and transient response. »Race cars get light wheels because there is a benefit to less rotational mass. The same rules apply for speakers. Having extremely light cone materials ensures that the music is tracked well, and that impulse response is extremely good in all Hybrid Audio Technologies speakers. » »»» Diaphragms that exhibit superior polar response. »Hybrid Audio Technologies tweeter designs utilize no larger than a 25mm tweeter diaphragm, as it’s widely acknowledged that smaller-diameter tweeters offer superior polar response and extended use without significant listener fatigue. »

»»» Low- and high-resonance tweeter applications »Hybrid Audio Technologies builds both low- and high-resonance tweeters for different in-car applications. The end-user can take advantage of low resonance, tuned chamber options in ring radiator or soft dome format, or high-resonance dome format for the ultimate in system flexibility. » »»» Excellent on- and off-axis frequency response. »Hybrid Audio Technologies incorporation of diaphragm material, diameter, and geometry, in concert with phase plug pole pieces, low-inductance profiles and light moving mass ensures that all Hybrid Audio Technologies designs work well both on- and off-axis. » »»» Low distortion motor topologies and flat/wide BL. »The motors of the midrange midbass units manufactured by Hybrid Audio Technologies provide for a flat and wide BL curve (as a learning note, BL is the equivalent of torque in a car; a car with a flat and constant torque curve provides much better acceleration and performance than a car with a peaky, non-constant torque curve). Reduced distortion and greater dynamics are the immediate sonic benefits. »

»»» Low inductance profiles. »Inductance is the biggest limiter of high frequency extension and modulation of inductance with stroke, frequency and power, and is the primary source of intermodulation distortion (IMD). Hybrid Audio Technologies speaker systems ensure optimization of the total inductance profile. » »»» Enhanced Driver Suspensions »All Hybrid Audio Technologies midrange and midbass designs utilize inverted butyl rubber high-loss surrounds which are highly consistent, terminating mechanical vibrations well, and having a low stiffness for positive damping of resonances. Spiders are designed for optimal performance, where vibrations in the spider are well damped and do not translate into the former or the cone. » »»» Quality factors amenable for infinite baffle operation. »Mechanical and electrical parameters are amenable to a variety of different installations and speaker locations. Hybrid Audio Technologies midrange and midbass drivers are intended to be used in an infinite baffle configuration ensuring fool-proof installation and exceptional sound quality “right out of the box.”

»»» Intensive development of speakers and not relying on passive filtering and equalization or tweeters crossed too low. »One of Hybrid Audio Technologies’s main design tenets is to spend the time and resources necessary to make the speakers exceptional in the design phase, and then use simpleton filtering to protect only for thermal protection at resonance. Simply put, board-mounted equalization corrects poor speaker design. Likewise, a poorly designed midrange or midbass requires the use of a tweeter crossed into the vocal spectrum. None of our designs, in any series, use crossovers that contain any form of equalization beyond simple tweeter attenuation, and likewise, none require the use of the tweeter to “carry” the vocal input signal. See “super widebandwidth operation,” left. » »»»

Class-leading cosmetics. »You can tell a Hybrid Audio Technologies design because it looks nothing like other speakers on the market. All of our designs are fresh, and not “rebadged” derivatives of other, existing speaker designs.
»»» Significantly undervalued products that out-perform competitors’ products. »All Hybrid Audio Technologies designs are priced significantly undervalued for the performance you get, and no other competing brand outperforms a Hybrid Audio Technologies product in their respective price ranges.

A lot of people running active setups use drivers with paper woofers as they will use drivers that were originally intended for home theater. My original plan was to use two seven inch Seas, which utilize paper, but have outstanding response and sensitivity. The only reason why I chose to go HAT is because I don't have time to properly run an active setup. That being said, the reviews I have read about HAT have been quite positive and Mr. Marv's customer service is top notch.

I'll throw out my $.02 as well. I have a 2010 DC- Marv built me a custom box & amp rack about 3.5 years ago. He sold me the Clarus for the front & Imagines for the rear. i could not be happier with the entire set up. He spent hours on the phone w/ me answering questions about install, music preferences, amps, headunits, wiring, etc...

In short, this is a great deal on great speakers. Marv's the best! Pull the trigger!

I was told today that my speakers were not the problem it was my Factory HU. I know the guy was just trying to sell me a Head Unit, but this is the crap that I am talking about. It's like snake oil salesmen!

Thank you for the compliment and glad you are still enjoying your system! :)

Unfortunately there are many people out there who believe that is the case however I am sure the many members here that I have convinced to keep their factory headunit and buy "better" speakers will tell you otherwise! :)

I told him there was no way I was changing out my Head Unit. I have everything that I want there. You can't tell me that you can't get quality sound out of quality speakers with a factory head unit.

I listened to a set of Hertz 6.5 Components that I really liked the sound on. I'm stupid for not getting the model number, but they were a Component set for $149.00 I think they were DSK165.3, if that helps. I'm actually pushing more towards the Hybrid Audio Imagine since I read a review on caraudioforum.

By the way the Hertz are Woofer cone: Water-repellent pressed paper. Who knew paper was the new competition woofer material?!?

    Here's a question:
Imagine I61-2v2 6.5" Component/Coaxial Amplified or run off of head unit?

You need to amp the system. Simple as that. There's plenty of options to add an amp and keep your stock head unit. There's no way your head unit delivers enough clean power to the speakers.

I've had one vehicle with no amp for the speakers and won't do that again. If you play around enough in audio you'll realize that you gotta amp your speakers. It would be like running giant tower speakers off your TV speaker. They will work but won't work right.
