Yep engine and transmission management are all integrated the mechanical stuff maybe easy but getting the trans to play well with others is going to be a problem. I don't know where you would find a transmission either for less than the price of a good small car.

Doesn't the transmission have its own ECU and its own speed sensors. What other integration does it need?

The transmission and engine would need to communicate but I feel like a custom ECU would solve that problem, and then you'd need a custom adapter plate for engine to transmission connection. Then account for custom plumbing for all of the cooler lines etc.. and the shifter not lining up with existing holes, new front and rear driveshafts, probably custom, to account for different lengths between them (since you just finished up the 4wd swap, congrats btw. I've been looking at swapping mine as well.)

Thanks. I'm not quite finished yet. I still have some wiring to do but I feel like the hard put is behind me. Like an idiot I thought it would be cool to do the E-shift t-case instead of the FJ J-shift box. I also decided I wasn't buying the ECU, so I had to design a custom control circuit to handle shifting the transfer case.

If you need some info or encouragement, hit me up and I'll help you out.

I appreciate it. I've been looking at it for a while and I'm going to try to make everything as mechanical as possible. ADD and all. I hate dealing with electronics, mainly because I'm not good with it.

I'm still in college so I've been searching for good prices and the cheapest ways to do it right and I think I'm gonna do it next summer or maybe next Christmas. Who knows when it'll get done really, but I'll do it one day.

Oh for sure, I never said it would be cheap or easy. I'd estimate atleast $8k if not more. Depending on availability of a totaled '16 within a few months of release, how fab-savy he is, how much work/labor is paid for vs. doing it yourself. A lot a variables, but expensive nonetheless. lol. I was just saying what I figured would be needed and what all would be able to be purchased vs. what would need to be custom. I forgot crossmembers and mounts as well.

The extra gear sounds nice and all, but it's not worth the time, money and headaches

There are over 100 P codes related to the transmission alone. I can't tell you if it has it's own control unit but I can tell you it's integrated with the engine control most likely if nothing else through a CAN buss. Bottom line it has to match the engine control. Have a look at P codes 700 to 800 and some thing, that will give you an ideal of how much they interface. The 6 speed will add code possibilities to the list that the existing engine control needs to contend with in order for the trans to work properly.

Thanks, I'm sure there are a crap load of codes to look through.

I don't know how intelligent we are. We all bought little trucks with less power and gas mileage when we could have paid at least the same (maybe less) for a bigger truck with more power and better gas mileage. Sometimes logic just goes out the window when it comes to your vehicle.

Logic never left when I purchased the Tacoma ( nor for 90% of those on this forum). I bought it because of the fact it is SMALL and not BIGGER, and not a ford , Dodge, or whatever domestic junk out there. What people don't get is you pay up for reliability.

Sick of the gas mileage bs on this forum. Not a day goes by without some nancy complaining about their gas mileage or what they can do to improve it.

Hey I get it. I don't expect everyone to understand the logic I put into my purchases. I bought my truck for all the same reasons you did. But there's still things left to desire about it. I'm not sick of the gas mileage complaining, but I am sick of everyone saying "it's not worth it, just trade it in" every time someone posts a question about making changes to the engine or transmission on these trucks. I don't need someone to tell me whether it's worth it or not. I'd rather gather all the facts and make the decision for myself. I hope everyone can respect that and the incredible knowledge base on the forum can continue to feed my brain. Without many of the posts on here, I wouldn't have been able to complete my 4wd conversion.
