Hi, I have a '06 double cab TRD PreRunner and I don't know where to check the transmission fluid. Is it the power steering wheel fluid? There's no dip stick for this model right?

    Thanks,
    Vivica

    welcome to tw!

the transmission is a sealed transmission...so there is no dipstick. the dealer will need to check it for you...and its a certain process they go thru to check them on the 2nd gen. tacomas.:)

Thank you Tacomaman06. Will the warning light show if the fluid is low? How often should it be checked?

Welcome to TW! Tacomaman06 is correct. Have a dealer check it. Not sure if there is a warning light or not.

no problem. yeah, if its low....a warning light should come on...........but if the truck is under warranty, you may wanna get them to check it now if you suspect anything wrong or anything. but for the most part...you should be fine.....and with now hauling/towing......100k miles is what toyota recommends on the change interval.:)

Question.. I took my truck to the dealer last Thursday cause the maintenance req'd light went on. I recently had my oil change last month. After the complimentary inspection, they told me I needed to get my valve cover replaced and that my truck has oil leak. I checked my oil today and it was fine. They said it will cost around $600-$700. Does it cost this much to get it replaced?

Im thinking your valve cover is probably fine. Many times, oil can spill from the bottle when filling, leading the dealer to tell you its the valve cover. To fix the miantinance light, with the engine Off, and the key in the ignition, press and hold the ODO Reset button. While holding it pressed, turn the key to the ON position, and wait for the ODO to reset to 0. Then, the maint light is reset. :)

Thanks Chris.. Just to be safe, should I take the truck to a different dealer? And do you know how much it would normally cost?

Yeah....I would have another dealer look at it. You can also take some close up pics of where the valve covers meet the engine, and post them on here. There are alot of folks on here that I would trust over a dealer. :) As for cost....Im not sure. I havent ever heard of one needing a replacement not covered under warranty.

Sounds like they're trying to sell you a mound of bullshit.

Open up your hood and take a look for yourself. Do some research and learn about valve covers & all that auto stuff. Never believe what a dealer tells you unless you research it yourself. 2nd oppinions are also a good idea if you're in doubt....

The maintenance req'd light comes on every 5000 miles regardless. The truck could be in perfect condition, it's gonna come on every 5000 miles to remind you to do your oil change.

It really shouldnt need checking unless there is a leak. Its good for 100K miles before scheadualled maintinance.

Yes that is the key word "Warranty". The dealerships do a good job when the truck is under warranty. But i know when my 05 Tacoma ran out it need about 600.00 dollars worth if work. I took to my mechanic it was about $50.00 part and $30.00 labor charge lol. But if it wasnt for an oil chang you could weld the hood shut and never have to worry about anything with these TOYOTA'S lol. My Tacoma is 13 years old and I plan on handing it down to my 7 year old so he cand it down to his kids lol. It will be just getting broke in.
