The silver lining might be that EPA numbers with Toyotas are usually pretty easy to achieve. Most Colorado owners (from what I have read on their forum) are getting less than EPA figs.

I ran some numbers to give myself some perspective on whether I should be concerned the economy numbers weren't as impressive as I hoped. Here's what I found.

Assuming 20,000 miles per year (long commute plus road trips), $3.30 per gallon gas, MT if avail, and my Xcab '99 as my baseline, here are *my* rough gas costs per year:

So the perspective? I will probably spend ~$55/month less on gas (-$652/yr) if I upgrade from my '99 to a 4WD MT DCAB '16. If I chose to go GM, it would only save me an extra $14 a month (-$173/yr).

Basically, if I was thinking of choosing the GM twins instead of the 3rd gen for fuel economy, I would be doing so over a measly $173 in savings per year, at best. Definitely not a decision breaker or maker over functionality, amenities, drivability, performance, etc.

In comparison, I have been averaging over $1k-2k in repairs on the '99 the past two years...mx cost on a new one will be effectively zero (most likely), and saving an extra $650/yr in gas makes this mpg -though a moderate improvement- a nice benefit to an upgrade.

It's quite simple. Those who don't currently own a pick-up truck and are in the market and are looking for only a midsize pickup truck, that is reliable, will buy the new Tacoma. Those currently driving a GEN 2 Tacoma with some life left on the truck, are not going to see much of an improvement to merit buying the new incarnation. I'm in the former group. Have zero use for a full-size pick up wouldn't be able to park it in the garage, wouldn't be able to park downtown, as I live in a city, not country -- zero use for a full-size pick-up. Plus wife would never drive something that big.

I'm curious about the other group of people who keep bitching about the MPG's. What better, more reliable, midsize truck is getting significantly better fuel economy? Or are you buying a Cayenne hybrid or a Prius with a tow hitch?

Yeah I don't understand how some people don't understand that some people do not want to drive a huge full size truck around for daily driving. Heck, the power on the new Tacoma is on par with what full size trucks did in the early 90's. So they can do a lot of stuff and be manageable in urban environments.

It is an improvement almost completely across the board, and a win in my book. Could it have been a bigger win. -- yeah, probably. Could have also been priced even higher too. "... winning is winning" - Dominic Toretto.

    yerp...

I have little use for a fullsize, can't get in down tight trails, those old low bridges you can't drive under, I live in the country....that and my wife would always be stealing it so she can haul feed and what not for her critters.... :p :D

Can't stand cities....much much happier here. Which reminds me I need to swing by the Fly Shop today...

I'm content with my view of the 4th fairway. I do enjoy the outdoors, as well. And I agree with the tight trails point. Cheers man.

In one of the videos posted the dude says they increased aero by 12% and that it was the largest improvement toyota has ever gotten for any of it's vehicles. To me that indicates that the aerodynamics play an important role in the new MPGs which in turn means that as soon you strap on 33's, a bumper, and lift, you may see a larger decrease in MPGs when compared to the hit the 2nd gen takes with the same mods.

If you are adding that stuff to your truck you shouldn't be complaining about mpg because its obviously not important to you.

18/23/20 EPA would probably translate into about 20/25/23 for me based on past experience with Tacomas and other cars.

I agree here. Even the TFL MPG video got them 25 mpg on a 2015 model. Heard one review saying up to 26 MPG was what he was seeing at 70 mph. Toyota gives more realistic specs than other automakers. They were using standardized towing methods before anyone else too.

I don't care about MPG. My truck is over 1K pounds heavier than stock and I have no clue what my MPGs are. Probably around 12 if I had to guess. It was just an observation that I had. There are plenty of people on here that run armor and 33's that do care about their fuel efficiency however.

Good for you. MPG is a huge factor for most people though. That is why automakers keep it top secret up until after people have already placed orders.

But MPG is not that important to those people otherwise they wouldn't make those modifications.

If you look around on here you'll find plenty of threads and posts with people complaining/discussing MPG's on their mod'd trucks.
