Just taking a quick look through it, some interesting things.

    Dual VVT-i added to 2TR-FE.
Manual transmissions are RC62F (changed from RA60) for 2GR-FKS and R156F (changed from R155/R155F) for 2TR-FE (Triple cone syncro for 1st, most ratios changed, GL-3 or GL-4 instead of GL-4 and GL-5 for gear oil).

The 2GR-FKS seems very similar to other D4-S 2GR engines like the 2GR-FSE, of course with the addition of VVT-iW to the intake camshaft to allow for Atkinson Cycle operation. It uses high power triple-electrode long-reach iridium spark plugs, which are good for 60,000 miles and are probably expensive. All A/T models get the 130A alternator, M/T get 100A or 130A with towing package. DI + Port injection appears to only be used at lower engine RPM's, while DI is used exclusively at higher loads and RPM's.

The 3.5L specs of 278hp and 265ft-lbs appear to be done on 87 (91 RON) octane.

The 6-speed auto is the AC60E and AC60F, which aren't used in any other current Toyota models in North America, I think.

I'll look through things and post cool bits, but if you want to check it out, it's on TIS.

There are now 8.0" and 8.8" rear differentials, depending on which model/options you have selected. All locking rear diffs are 8.8".

Front lower control arms are stronger and the bushings/bolts are larger.

Only the off-road package gets the upgraded shocks, previously the TRD Sport did as well, I believe.

The TPMS system now shows pressures for each wheel, based on distance to the receiver, so you can still rotate the tires and the pressures will show on the correct wheel.

Question... If I am buying the 16' TRD Sport (since I want an AC Manual) will that 8.0" rear be inferior to the 8.8" on the TRD? Eventually I'll probably put a air locker in there...

That sucks if the optimum HP is not achieved with regular gas!

Owner's manual states 87 or higher octane required. NCF shows 91 or higher, but doesn't specify the method, owner's manual is more clear, 87 R+M/2, 91 RON.

They show in detail how they've modified the frame and cab structure for increased rigidity, lots of extra bracing it looks like (welded on and bolted on).

Toyota has added a lot of foam, larger weatherstrips, etc., to reduce noise. Even inside the doors. The also made the windshield and back glass thicker.

I knew I had read something about this earlier. From the Toyota News release:
"...Tacoma TRD Sport models are equipped with sport-tuned shocks. TRD Off-Road models include an off-road tuned suspension equipped with Bilstein® shocks."

So the Sport gets special shocks, just not by Bilstein?

@Jeff Lange - thanks for the excellent data. Always appreciate constructive, useful posts around here.

I wonder how much extra power this 2GR variant could output using premium if it was tuned as such. Would be nice to have the option (e.g, I am towing through the mountains today and need all my horsies for the afternoon).

    Sounds like it, yeah.

Probably similar to the 311hp / 280ft-lbs the 2GR-FKS gets in the GS350.

@Rock Lobster ... Very true. Time will tell. Question for you... I ordered the 16' already, but my hang up is the Rear Locker(TRD OR) vs Non rear locker(TRD Sport). Toyota said they revised it.. I would really like the Rear locker for this situations but the don't make the AC Manual TRD OR only in the TRD Sport... That 6' bed is what I am really hanging up on, along with rear locker... Can anyone help me figure this out

Good point. Would be an interesting marketing-driven move by Toyota to do that....offer a Premium Gas map. Then they could advertise best-in-class power. Tricky, but still valid.

So the engine will use Direct Injection AND Port Injection AT THE SAME TIME at lower RPMs? So gas will be coming out of the port injectors and the head injectors AT THE SAME TIME?

Yes, this is done in all D-4S systems, though when both are used varies.

Thank you very much for your reply. No one ever had an answer to this when I previously asked

A second detent has been added to the door check to stop the door in a second position when opening it.

HFO 1234yf (R1234yf) is used for the A/C system. I believe they have moved the entire A/C system away from the Delco type to a Denso system. Should use ND-12 oil.

It looks like they've added a PTO quick heater as well. (An electric heater that warms the cabin until the engine is up to temperature).
