The Duramax in the Colorado has a timing belt. This thread is about the challenge of the upcoming Diesel Colorado to the 2016 Tacoma.

Not really. There were injector issues but things like that were covered under warranty. The 6.6L has passed the test of time, that's why since 2000/01 its still the same motor that continues to be updated and tweaked. Whereas Ford went from the 7.3L which couldn't meet emissions to the POS 6.0L to the POS 6.4L with the "superior" twin turbo design to finally now the 6.7L. Back in the early Duramax days the motors were clearly stamped "ISUZU", you could see it when you popped the hood. It's a quality motor designed by one of the top diesel manufacturers in the world and GM. But this new motor seems like it is a VM shitori, it has nothing to do with Isuzu or the 6.6L Duramax.

I thought the injector issues were only covered once then GM left a whole bunch of guys out in the cold? IIRC, I could be wrong. Either way it doesn't matter. I agree that the Duramax has been a good motor. The biggest complaint I've heard about the Duramax 2500/3500 trucks have to do with electronic hiccups from the transmission and shut downs in snow if you forget to put the leather grill cover on.

Agreed. The big Duramax is now probably the most reliable Pickup diesel. VM Motori is not shit. One of the diesel mags, Diesel World? took the motor in the Grand Cherokee apart and found it to be robust. The problems have all been with the emission systems. Give it time I'm sure all of the manufactures will figure it out.

With that turbo tubing shit gets real tight in that engine bay. Just an observation.

If the emissions system doesn't cause the engine any issues it should be about as reliable as the Colorado. Which isn't great right now but it is the first year of production too.

What always turned me off a bit about diesels was the short oil change intervals and cost for an oil change. Diesel is cheaper than regular right now at my local stations, but usually that is not the case and not guaranteed to continue. They have their benefits but one has to do some careful calculations to determine how many miles on the truck will be required to make the benefits outweigh the cost detriments.

If you are buying a Diesel truck to save money on commuting then save your money. At best this truck will get 30 mpg and it'll take years to get back the $3K initial investment (plus the price of the new truck over your old one). After that, if you have any emissions or injector issues, you can kiss any financial incentives good bye. If you want Diesel for a bit more torque and because you like the range of the Diesel then have at it. The money savings side is so convoluted and hard to predict that you are likely better off with a leased small engine gas car than spending the extra dough on the Diesel engine option.

Pretty much my thoughts also. If I was towing a 5000 lb trailer and Bobcat for work every day I'd be able to make the $$$$$ work and planning on keeping the truck for as many miles as I could get out of it.

A guy like Swollengoat that wants the small diesel in a midsize platform for recreational hauling and towing, that could work out well also. But again, the mileage on the truck needed to make the financial breakover point is getting up there into the 200,000 mile range. Kind of a small niche market which is what is keeping Toyota out of the midsize diesel.

I expect to see the Diesel sales numbers surge the first year and then die off a bit. If the reliability is there it could make it's own market much like the TDI Jetta has done. If the reliability sucks this could be another mark against Diesels coming to North America and scare off anyone else from trying.

I want to see one of these small Diesels tow before I jump up and down about it. I'm sure it will be better than a V6 but I'm not sure if, other than mpg wise, it will beat the towing experience from a half ton. If it's no better than the half tons then meh.

Good, considering I paid $5K off sticker. I wanted heated seats, and in Canada you get those on the TRD Sport. I would of went TRD Offroad but you can't get a new double cab offroad in Canada.

How much money have you wasted driving a 5.7 L Tundra instead of a 3.5 L Ecoboost Ford? At least $5K entry price and all that fuel mileage difference. No need to start shit over buying preferences. All I was saying is that trying to figure out the break even on a Diesel is difficult and, unless you pack on the miles quick, most people might never see the promised savings. However if you buy a cheap used commuter with a small gas engine, or lease a hybrid/electric car, your savings are relatively easy to calculate and will come about far quicker than trading in a truck for a Diesel.

Again, I'm not knocking Diesel. It would satisfy a lot of people if Toyota offered one and I would look at it for my next truck. I just don't buy into getting one for the sake of saving money because I'm not sure the benefit is their fast or consistent enough.

So do they have them at dealers to take a look at them.
Diesel by me is down below of gasoline at this point. Plus I found a place to get some vegetable oil, going back to driving for free would be nice.
