?2wd to 4wd?

how would i go about making my 01 prerunner into a 4wd? can it be done? and how much money would be invilved?

 

yes it can but you might as well buy a new truck.. it would be a lot of moolah

For a first gen its actually not that expensive from what I've read. You can also do quite a bit of the swap with aftermarket parts instead of OEM.
When you're done, you should have a very capable 4x4.

 

so what all do you think i need?
Transmission w/ transfer case
4WD read drive shaft
front CV shafts
Front diff...
from what ive read thats what i think i need...where would be a place to find out what all i needed. i dont want to mess it up lol.

 

im new to all these terms and lingo. so im kind of just learning and doing my own research. but i just want to get the right info.

 

If you do try the swap I'd go solid axle. It would be alot stronger and the way to go. and maybe easier.

 

If all this is NEW to you....and you're not even sure about the lingo....then this project is probably something you should not attempt.

Putting 4WD onto a 2wd is not an easy job. It'll be expensive, it'll require a lot of time, and a lot of knowledge or it won't be done accurately.

I've never done it - but I can tell you...it'll be more than just slapping in a transfer case, driveshaft, & front differential. There are other components that would need to be changed that you wouldn't even think of.

You're better off selling the Prerunner and buying a 4WD truck. At that point, you can learn and do your own lift kits and modifications (smaller things) that'll get you up to speed with the lingo & knowledge.

well not the work just forums and stuff im new to. i had an 88 toyota pickup 4wd that i did some work too like transmission and stuff but swaping or making a 2wd into a 4wd im just trying to gain some insite on. thanks for the replies and info guys!

 

I get wanting to make your truck bigger and better.

But keep in mind you can sell your truck and buy a 4WD for allot less.
You might even break even.

 

Not saying that you couldn't do it..... The first thing that came to mind was - *in over your head*.

I've seen a lot of guys jump into BIG projects similar and after a while, they start loosing interest because it's taking them too long and costs too much. After seeing their rig sit in their garage for a year or more....they realize they'll never finish it. Then - they start selling off their stuff and starting with something else more managable.
