Here are some photos of the trip I took with my dad up Kingston Peak trail this weekend. The weather was great and it is always nice to be able to spend some time with my dad.

Steamboat's a mess today because of the USA Pro Challenge, and I didn't bother going across town to work, so I went wheeling instead. Hit the Ellis Jeep Trail solo, which I do not recommend, but I'm glad I did as it might just be the last time I ever get to run that trail. Ran into a forest service person on foot surveying the road that waved me town, and told me the road is scheduled to be gated later this year, with a significant reroute coming next year. The reroute will more closely follow the continental divide, a fair bit west of the current trail. She told me they were purposely trying to keep it challenging, but I doubt it will be anything like Ellis. So, if you've ever wanted to hit the Ellis Jeep Trail, the next few weeks might just be your last chance.

So, a few pics. Started off on the quick out and back of the Manzanares Lake road. Never done it so I explored a little. Nothing too interesting:

    IMAG1172_zpshpjr4mqk_2cda9cfa28d9d008998e56e14aea6f4076d4ea2b.jpg

All the beetle kill is starting to fall, this forest needs to burn.

    IMAG1173_zps9h1w1ucj_7e173c4616a072af7e85875dc7464f9b8e17c32c.jpg

First bit of mud bog on the Ellis Jeep Trail:

    IMAG1175_zpskdmy09lr_e6b88febee0e9d01e8b507c950fa8bf8caacc797.jpg

    Got stuck pretty quick:

    IMAG1176_zpstfbb2wqq_9b540e604d60a393c8e25c94903525e74686e68e.jpg

    More license plate carnage:

    IMAG1177_zpsvq5kddci_1319901cd6408c703d8e8cf044af2071bedb42d8.jpg

Had to winch out of it, nasty mud everywhere! When will I learn?

    IMAG1179_zpsxebcj2cc_aff445be7dd625971a28aafbfded15daeb690e79.jpg

Famous mud bog. I believe the original road is on the right. @Husky Driver and I pulled out the abandoned jeep in the middle last year. Road keeps getting pushed further to the left:

    IMAG1181_zpsxywz02eb_8a36b0cd4e692d8826d5fd0939d03b203b2acec0.jpg

And from the other side, don't know who would attempt that big bog.

    IMAG1182_zpslqa2xeps_d85af6772238508b670c489fbbd7033508f1d70e.jpg

Anyways, glad I ventured out for the quick trip and got to talk to the forest service about the future, or lack thereof, of the trail.

That's a bummer, I've never been on that trail.
And I agree, the beetle kill trees falling over the trails is almost a daily thing now. I started carrying my chainsaw too, used it a few times yesterday.

Well here are my pics from Wheeler lake yesterday.

Well we noticed a mine shaft up on the hill so we decided to hike up to it.

sorry for the poor quality, I guess the phone didn't focus.

From the mine we went to the upper lake.

I wanted to hike to a possibly higher pond but clouds were starting to roll in. So we headed back down to the trucks.

Wheeler was a lot of fun and will do it again some time and will hike to the possible upper pond. Oh and thanks to Jace (@lotsoftoys) I now have a new nickname and saying. Nickname is Mountain Goat. The saying is; I wheel by braille but I hike like a goat. (I think the saying is right but Jace will correct it if need be.)

    What haven’t I changed?
Some pics that my wife took on the trail.

The shrubbery made the trail quite narrow

Jace @lotsoftoys said he was taking photos but that's not what it looks like

    Awesome scenery
