Homesick @ school

I'm feeling a bit homesick right now as I transferred to college 3 hours away from home. Im not too sure if I want to stay next quarter, I plan on going back home to clear my head. Has anyone ever felt homesick or decided the school was not right for them and went home?

 

3 hours away? Just drive home on weekends. Its tough the first year, just get to know the people at the dorm. Trust me it gets better!

 

One quarter and 3 hours and you are homesick?? Give it a bit more time man...Get into a group for some sports stuff or find a place to volunteer (I'm a HUGH Habitat for Humanity fan).

If your homesickness is the only thing making you think about leaving- I'd do what you can to stick it out.

If you are having other issues-Grades, Lifestyle, etc- then I'd talk with your family and friends about it.

 

Is this your first time away from home for an extended period of time? I'm assuming it is...Make more of an effort than you normally would to make friends. Once you have a few people you truly consider friends you'll probably feel better about being away from home.

 

Make a few friends, you'll have a blast and won't realize you are away. like adam said, drive home on the weekends. It's all part of the experience.

 

I miss my home and I'm only two hours away. But I know if I go back it won't be the same because all of my friends will still be gone. It is just all apart of college man. It's just apart of going to college and being on your own.

 

Thx for your guys' input. I know i should give it time since it has only been a quarter. I believe this school is not in my comfort zone and that is why Im feeling this way. Ive been feeling depressed lately.

 

Hey I know the feeling when I moved away from home. I went from Cali to Colorodo. Not for school, but for my so called ex now. It was hard at first but then again, I was with a girl so maybe try and find a girl to hang out with. I understand if you dont want a relationship since its your first year of college but you know how girls have effect on guys!!!!

But then again if your really that depressed and lonely, maybe you should go back. But make sure you have plans before you do. Just dont go back to be with family. This is the time in your life where you should be planning for your future.

 

Just starting talking to people, then hang out with them, then be happy you can do whatever you want without having to clear it with your parents.

Also, it's good practice. I just moved here in January where I knew _nobody_. At least in college you're surrounded by people your own age with lots of get-to-know-you events.

 

Yeh I just graduated college and my freshman year wasn't too bad. First semester blew cuz I basically stayed in my dorm room. The following semester I went out and joined some clubs, started meeting people and now those people are my best friends. This is the best time of your life (I say that like I was told not what I know) but trust me now that I'm in the real world I want to be back in college. Easier albeit less money but a TON more entertaining!

 

Try to find out what it is exactly about college life that is making you miss home. If its just the company of your parents then you can go see them on the weekends.

For me, I missed home because I had my own space there. I didn't start enjoying college until I moved out of the dorms and into an apartment. I still had a roomate but I didn't have to share a room with someone and that made all the difference. I was depressed too when I was in school. It all came down to being unhappy because of my living conditions.

Things should get better once you tackle the problem but the first step is to figure out what that is. Whatever you do don't just sit in your room. Get out, get into things. You'll find that even if you go out to do something by yourself (hike, whatever) you'll inevitably meet people that way.

 

Yeah I think your actually lucky!! I went to a community college that was only about 25 minutes away from my house so I just commuted back and forth. So I never got to really experience the true college life!!! Not to many people do!!! I think you should just take this opportunity and run with it!!! Most people I know say that their college years were the best years of their life!!! Who knows, once you give it some time and start feeling better, you might be one of those people!! But like all these other people are saying, its normal and you will get better!! Trust me, Id rather be going through what you are then what I am going through right now.

 

Make friends, go places you've never been before with them or even places you have been. Take them home too. Enjoy the time you're away and work on building new relationships. These will be key later in life.

If your having trouble, being out of your comfort zone, find someone to talk to. Chances are, you're not alone.

 

Get drunk. That's what I did. Then you won't even know where you are!

 

Yeah that always works until you wake up the next day and missed all your classes!!!

Just get involved with some stuff. Once your course work picks up too you won't have time to be homesick. I found too that the more i went home (about 3 hours also) the less I enjoyed school and fewer friends I made. I went home a lot my first 2 years and really regret it. Basically kept me from becoming involved in some club sports and joining a frat. Just start hanging out with people in your dorm, find people with similar interests.

I met my best friend at school cuz i saw him outside in the lot working on his car and we just started talking. Lived together for 2 years and we still hang out a lot after graduation.

It'll be alright man, i guarentee just about everyone in your dorm has similar feelings from time to time.

 

Ive joined a club and my cousin also goes here so he shows me around town and introduces me to his friends. Its cool meeting new people everyday but for some odd reason im still unsatisfied with my life out here. I appreciate all your guys' advice. keep them coming!

 

thats good you joined a group. let me tell ya... i wish i could be living the real "college life" i go to college 20 mins from my house because my step dad works with the university so im taking advantage of the tuition rate and going locally. if it werent for the tuition, id be away from home for sure.

hang in there. even my first quarter here was a little uneasy. you im not a sophmore here.... you will get used to it.
