According to Sweers the carry over cab/everything else was to please the aftermarket. Only the seat belt bracket was carry over though. His product peoples say it's "all new" bumper to bumper.
People, put some cream on those hurt butts. Not saying it's bad to do a carry over. Only saying it's kind of shifty of Toyota to just come out and lie through their teeth about their products.
I would have been totally fine if they just said "We felt our current baseline Tacoma was a great template for the next generation Tacoma because people love the size and styling so we decided to stick with that." over "Uhh...yeah....it's all new bumper to bumper except for maybe a seat belt bracket.", which is just bullshit.

I'm sure leaving hard points in the same place relative to each other reduces production/change over cost between generations. It could leave added resources for the project. Extra content? Engineering time? Extra profit for TM?

You guys are getting all butthurt, but i love that i can easily swap a diff from an 08' taco into my 89' 4runner, or a 79' pickup. Or an engine from a 2004 taco into my 89' 4runner. Hell i can swap center consoles from a 04 to an 84. Why is this bad? It is one of my favourite parts about toyotas. Just because you can swap, doesn't mean it hasn't been upgraded! My 89' is built from parts from many trucks newer than it, i love that's it's easy to put new tech in the old milk crate.

I think that was the best part about the '16 :notsure:. Excluding the Jeep, the Tacoma has the most robust aftermarket support on the planet.

Sorry guys, I think Toyota upgraded exactly what needed to be upgraded and kept what works... However, I hope they fixed/beefed up the LCA mounting.

and I am not ragging on the Tacoma itself. I still think it's the best-in-class. Just head to coloradofans.com forums and see the plethora or problems they are having on their trucks that are less than a year old.

    Yep.

I don't care if a lot of it is a carry over, doesn't really make sense to build it from the ground up (why reinvent the wheel, right?)...however the shoveling of bullshit early on by Sweers...is well.... bullshit. ;)

Well I really hope you guys aren't surprised Toyota (or any other multi billion dollar company for that matter) fudged around the facts...

    good gawd no.

After owning Toyotas for a quarter of a century, I wasn't really expecting much from them. Toyotas are typically pretty boring, reliable...but mind numbly boring. At least this version is hard to look at. err wait a minute...

I can appreciate the point of view of "being lied to"... but what kind of reception would they have gotten if he stood there at what's the most important truck they've built in America and say "Introducing the sorta new Tacoma, let's not concentrate on what we've improved but better yet, let's talk about how similar this truck is to the decade old model." umm.. yeah... I see both sides but from a marketing standpoint, they are pushing the positives and since the truck look similar to the last gen they don't want to expand on what materials were reused even though there's nothing wrong with them... they want to put it into the people's minds that this is an all new truck, and for what's important it very much is.

I don't think he "lied." Prevaricated maybe but that's to be expected. Anyone trying to get a straight answer from the horses mouth is bound to be disappointed...

Problem I have with it is, it really isn't that much of an improvement. People have been screaming for years for better mileage...and it really isn't all that much better. Willing to bet it the real world, it will the same as the out going to model.

Only thing they seem to be pushing is the crawl control (perhaps since the rest of the improvements are mediocre) , which Subaru and others have been using something similar for years. Crawl control...meh big deal...

Where is my 30 mpg Tacoma? That is what I have been waiting for....instead we get crawl control and social media bullshit...of yeah, a narcissistic GoPro mount...greaaaaat...hope the next one comes with a fucking selfie stick.

Toyota trucks have pretty much been the same truck generation after generation, until the move to mid size was made in 2005. Throughout all those years only things that were changed were aesthetics, safety, and engine performances. The 16 isn't shocking to me and it's pretty much what Toyota does. Overall the truck is excellent. The only issue I have is a diesel option. Other than that, I'm good with the way it is.

v6 cars cant get 30mpg, nevermind big ass pickup trucks. 23mpg is pretty good for the new TACO.

Didn't 2nd gen come with 8.4 inch axle and TRD Off Road only with 8" and a locker? Now all Tacomas except TRD's come with 8" and TRD's with 8.7"? Or did I get it completely wrong?

You better check up on that again. Lots of new v6 cars get well into the 30's for highway
