The reason mt are geared higher than autos (generally) is mostly because people complain about lack of passing power otherwise. I guess no one wants to downshift on the highway. Hence the worse hwy mpg. Even BMW does it on their M3. It's madness!

I was looking at the TIS today as well. No torque curve that they used to include, though.

Looks to me like the diff ratio numbers are backwards on the 2.7 - with the HIGHER numbered rear end on the auto instead of the manual. That would be weird, and is backward from the rear ends on the V6.

    I'm betting typo.

Don't expose that all mushmouse has got is bad Ford jokes, even though he's never owned one, and comments about the good ole days that no one know gives two shites about.

Honda made a freaking chain drive two stroke civic at one point. I guess they should go back to making those too lol.

No, that is a rating with "RON", which equates to 87 at the pump (as I understand it)

You must only use unleaded gasoline.Select octane rating 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher.
Use of unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than 87 may result in engine knocking. Persistent knocking can lead to
engine damage. At minimum, the gasoline you use should meet the specifications of ASTM D4814 in the U.S.A..

Too soon to tell but the gearing on the mt may be better than auto with 33/35 inch tires. That 6th in the auto would be unusable with large tires

So, I started looking down that new MT 6 speed, thinking that it looks like it might make a really nice swap-in for an R155F, given that first to 4th gear are pretty much identical, 5th is just a touch lower, and it adds a nice and high 0.71:1 6th gear second overdrive.....

    But then the reverse.

The heck are they thinking with putting 3.39:1 reverse? TRYING to burn clutches?

Cute how the R156 is *exactly* the same as the R155. Think I may have seen something about synchros that maybe shift a touch smoother around the 1-2-3 range.

Anyhow, since Toyota is obviously NEVER going to yield a transmission with a good selection of gear ratios, it got me to thinking about modifications. I think I looked at doing this once before, but it looked from the service manual that the gears were inseparable from the counter shaft. Kinda sucks. But today I had another look at it, and it turns out that not all of the gears actually are inseparable. In particular, both sides of 5th gear actually separate entirely from the shafts.

I found some references to custom gearing for some of the older R150 and R151 transmissions, and a lot of reference to another similar R-series transmission, the R452 from the Toyota Dyna. Apparently, Marlin Crawler used to swap 1st and 5th gears from the Dyna transmission into R150/151's. From what I can tell, 1st gear (5.15:1) requires pretty much swapping out the ENTIRE guts of the box, but 5th gear can be changed without even removing the transmission from the truck! Yeah, transfer case *does* have to come off still.

5th gear on the Dyna R452 is 0.69:1. With 4.1 diff (<='15), that makes 2.83:1 final. With '16 3.91 diff, that makes 2.70:1 final.
'16 automatic is 0.58*4.3 = 2.49:1. That is still a higher ratio than swapping in a 0.69:1 5th gear to *any* 4-cyl MT (except maybe 5-lug...), which means.... it can do it.

Side-effect: will have to downshift sooner, will have to run in 4th gear in some situations where 5th previously would have done the job. The 6 speed MT would be really nice, if not for that horrid reverse gear since it yields the same 1-5, and adds on the extra overdrive.

Wonder if it will be possible to swap out the reverse gear on that one?

    Parts required: 33336-25030 (5th gear $30 US), and 33046-25030 (counter-shaft 5th gear, $100 US).

Alternative ratio: 0.75:1 using the same two parts from an R154 Toyota Supra.
