Prepping for Sound Deadening

Hi TW,

I am going to be getting my shipment of sound deadener and sound deadening foam soon. I plan on covering as much of the doors and rear as 36 square feet will get me.

My question is what chemical is good for prepping the surface of the inside of the doors for the sound deadener adhesive? All I can think of is rubbing alcohol but its kind of expensive per ounce for what it is. Any other better options?

Paint thinner or Naptha come to mind...not sure of the cost to volume ratio though.

 

Aren't the inside of the doors painted? I would think paint thinner would cause a sticky gooey mess instead of cleaning the surface.

I don't mean to say that rubbing alcohol is expensive, but when its like 10 bucks for 16 ounces, there has got to be something better. If not I don't mind buying it, it just seems surprising.

 

I just wiped everything down with a wet rag. The stuff I used had no problem sticking like crazy to anything it touched.

Paint thinner will probably have no effect on paint, unless the paint is still wet. This is from the DIY website and was my understanding as well...it us primarily used to dilute or clean up wet, oil based paints. Naptha will clean up most oily residue as well and dries really fast without leaving a residue. I guess you could try ammonia too, but the fumes are potent and not all that pleasing. I would avoid mineral spirits because I believe it may leave an oily residue behind when dry.

BTW....I just got my deadener in the other day and was planning on using Naptha...unless someone else has a better recommendation...I'm staying tuned as well.

 

You can use mineral spirits, it is often called paint thinner. Turpentine will leave a residue....do not use lacquer thinner. Windex is ok if the surface is just dirty, not oily or greasy.

 

After doing a bit more research, I ended up buying denatured alcohol, for 4 dollars a quart.

I chose it because it evaporates quickly, does not leave a residue, and will not soften paint.

 

That would work. Was going to say Acetone too, but that would be more 'spensive.

 

I have acetone, it just happens to be in my wifes makeup bag. Last time I used the whole bottle and caught a little heat haha. Couldn't believe that little bottle was 10 bucks.

 

Yeah, shit is expensive. Works well at cleaning though.

Well when you put me on the spot haha. Yeah I might as well do a little write up. I know a lot of guys that have done sound deadening with dynamat, raammat, ect., but i haven't seen a lot of installs with sound deadening foam. I want to add the foam to see if I can not just get rid of vibration, but block out some road/tire noise. Here's what I got on the way.

Wow! That deadening project looks intense. I think the foam will cut a lot of vibes down. You may even notice a temp difference in the cab. That would be awesome.

I was really excited to find the foam. The biggest headache is going to be cutting it to fit. The foam essentially has to create an entire wall between the interior panel and the metal door panel to be effective. Who knows, maybe I can become a TW entrepreneur and start selling a template so you can just cut the foam and stick.

If I get a temp difference that will be an added bonus. The A/C could definitely use a break in this 90 degree heat!

I should start the install sometime next week when my stuff gets here. I will post up some pictures.

Acetone.

 

Purple power. It's cheap and it works great as a degreaser without any fear of harming your paint. Also good and cleaning up dirt. Sprays on and wipes off.
