Reverse gears aren't synchronized so grinding will happen shifting into reverse unless you come to a full stop. Same thing with low range tcase gears.

Locks the transfer case from awd to 4wd.

Puts the power true 50/50 split between the front and rear axles. Normal driving for us is like when you throw a normal Tacoma into 4wd.. The axles moving independently.

Google awd and 4wd and start reading

    :D

The awd transfer cases have a differential in them that you "lock" in making it a true 50/50 split as stated above. Locking the case is the same thing as locking a rear diff, applies even power to both outputs. In a rear diff the outputs and the left and right axle shafts, in a awd tcase the outputs are the front and rear driveshafts

Thank you for making sense. I know how my rear e locker works. Finally something I can relate to :)

Still though... It's not really AWD because it's still a true 4wd transfer case.. Most AWD are control by a computer.
An advanced version of AWD would be like crawl control or A-trac...

Our transfer cases are truly all mechanical... Old school...

I wonder why tacomas don't get awd with a tcase lock if fjc's and lc's and I think someone said 4runner do now to...

4runners do get the t-case lock... well they used too.. Not sure with all this new technology... It's on par with why land cruiser after 2000 got rid of the Front and rear lockers for the A-trac system... Easier for us to let the computer work for us... It's what we wanted... Even the jeep rubicon has a version of the "a-trac" system along front and read lockers now...

I have no use for Trac and A-Trac, i dont understand that electronic gizmo mumbo jumbo as I drive an 03 prerunner TRD and will not likely ever buy any Toyota post 2005-ish year model. I really really hate Toyota America and I'm starting to dislike the new Toyota way of doing things in general. Ugly machines, stupid electronic gimmicks, decline in general QDR and rediculous pricing. I'll stick with used Toyotas pre-2005 ;)

Good it's all a gimmick that sells..... because that what us the consumer wants..
Learn to drive.. Know when use the 4wd and when not to... If the trail gets overwhelming.. Turn around... If you break.. You will learn not to do it next time... Always go with someone you trust...

You Learn from experience.... not from a computer doing it for you..

So I think yall have convinced me I need to buy a land cruiser as my first 4x4 and when the time comes to retire the taco from daily driving I'll probably buy a 2014 ecoboost 3.5L f150... Because 2.7L is dumb and the 2015 looks gay

What were the major differences between the same year model cruiser and your lexus?

Just don't be stupid and buy one with A GM diesel in it like @loco. It's all about the Tried and True 4.7 v-8... Bullet proof... Minus the water pump and pulleys that needs to be replaced between 90-100k miles. Lol..

Yeah I been considering a later model first gen 4.7L Tundra 4x4 TRD as well. It would be sick if I could find a s/c for it
