Maybe after taking a good look at them, the ugly-factor convinced him to get a 2015 before they were all gone? LOL

Atrac is only found on the TRD OR 4x4 trucks..... its plastered all over the official toyota manuals.

ATRAC is not gone from the TRD OR 4x4.

Wow... crazy to see that I started this thread in Jan...

As specs have come out, it's really not worth me getting a new truck.. here on oahu (and for my use) I don't NEED a 4x4... most every time we go up in the mountains, I have friends with 4x4s, recovery gear, and winches... I really only get stuck when a heavy rain the night before, and the mud is THICK.. if MPGs were a lot better, I may have, but I'll just keep adding toys to my paid-off toy... just added a frontrunner rack this past weekend.. lol..

Not sure what taco206 is asking about.. yes there are a lot of tacomas on the road, yes a bunch are for looks, spacers, and blocks, yes some have super wides, but 99% of the TW hawaii guys are real suspension lifts...

The easiest way to explain it, is to think of A-TRAC as 'automatic front and rear lockers'. If you begin to get stuck (spinning tires on front or rear), the A-TRAC goes 'active' and stops the spin, so effective power goes to the good traction tires instead, and you move on. When traction is good, the A-TRAC is on standby.

Things to understand 2WD vs. 4WD:

*4WD doubles the traction, less chance of getting stuck. However, if you do, you will be further 'in' than if you get stuck in 2WD.

*Traction Control (Limited Slip), called 'TRAC', 'AUTO LSD', and 'TRAC OFF' by Toyota will improve your ability to keep moving when non-TRAC Tacomas will have only wheel spin. AUTO LSD and TRAC OFF are stronger levels of TRAC, as they both have the engine output regulation turned OFF. These are 2WD and 4WD High Range systems. No TRAC or TRAC OFF in 4WD Low, unless you perform the yellow wire (4 LO TRAC) mod. The Off Road TRD does have 4WD LOW additional traction, see next line.

*Only the 4WD OFF ROAD TRD has A-TRAC and Rear Locking Differential, in 4WD LOW RANGE. The A-TRAC is a more extreme version of TRAC that actually stops spin, rather than slows down spin, so all possible energy transfers to the tires with traction, rather than some of it. A-TRAC is on all 4 tires, so it provides more traction than a rear locking differential. A locker splits power 50/50 between the two tires on that axle (no one tire spinning).

** Off pavement for any distance, dropping air pressure in all 4 tires will improve traction, reduce chance of flat tires from sharp rocks, and improve comfort. Typically down to 25 psi to 20 psi. An electric air pump should be in your truck to refill the tires, as well as a tire plug kit for repairs.

** If you are in deep sand, and have tire spin, deflate the tires at least 50% of street pressure to continue ahead 18 psi to 14 psi typical for all terrain tires (remove any built up sand from the tires to ease the move forward). 8-10 psi if mud terrain or 3 ply sidewall tires... do not speed, turn quickly, or slam the brakes when deflated this much!

@OZ-T the ATRAC portion of his comment is related to 2nd Gen, but everything else is great advice for many people like myself who have never owned a 4x4 vehicle.

@David K I appreciate the time you put into writing and being detailed, and specific in different scenarios. I'll definitely write this down and remember for when I'm out and about on the trails. Thankful for people like you who share the wealth of info and pass it along in a respectful manner, and not casting us newbies down :p

In regards to what you guys said about the 4x4. Is the TRD Sport 4x4 Manual less capable by a long shot compared to the TRD OR Manual? The automatic is out of the question, no fun for me.

A lot of these new features are to compensate for properties of new trucks that make them worse off road. The mid siz Tacoma is way too long compared to my early model standard cabs which were lighter, shorter with better off road properties then the new and frankly, way too long Tacos. These things are longer then 4Runners. I did just as well with my old trucks off road as my new TRD OR......I just hated riding in it on the highway. That's where the real changes are made, on road. The traction toys are to compensate for much of the disadvantages of making them better on road.
