    Not entirely true

"Under Section 40 of the Criminal Code, which deals with the defence of dwellings, Nichols says, "everyone who is in possession of a dwelling house is justified in using as much force as necessary, to prevent any person from forcibly breaking into or entering the dwelling house without lawful authority."

Cohen echoes Nichols' sentiments, adding that when it comes to defending themselves, Canadians have the most rights inside their own homes.

"This area is less grey than others. The rule of reasonable force still applies, but most judges will give you the benefit of the doubt," Cohen says. "… You can use any force you deem necessary to remove the burglar from the house and eliminate the threat to yourself.""

Seems like they don't want to come straight out and say yes you can use a firearm to protect yourself. I would take that as a yes though and protect myself. Depending on what state you live here depends on what you can do and use. We support the castle doctrine here and our vehicle is pretty much an extension of our dwelling. If someone attacks you while you are driving, you have the right to defend yourself there as well.

Anyone ever had to do that? That's one of the reasons I carry mine when we go off. Don't want to come across any crazy wildlife. I'll do all the standards with trying to look bigger and slowly back away and all that, but when it comes down to it, it's my wife and I or the bear.

Bear spray is a better option. I'd carry both.

I really dont understand that. I have heard it often. Not sure i buy into it. Dont have any bears here in Austin TX. Seems like a spray that irratates a bear enough to make him leave would all so effect the sprayer of the spray. I have maced my friend and it got on me as well. Seems like a gun would put the bear down and end it right there. Sounds like a lib anti gun agenda advice. Like telling a woman its better to pee on her self to avoid rape than shoot the mother fucker in the face.

I've heard of that before but have never met anybody that has actually used it....on a bear. I'm sure it'll work some, but when it comes down to it that's my life on the line. Do I want to trust a stronger pepper spray and hope it works and doesn't just anger the bear even more or just end it there after I do all of the other precautions and such.

It hasn't happened to me, but this has happened to our neighbor. What happens if a drunk 16 year old kid stumbles into your house because he thinks it's his? You peg him with a round and take away his life over a stupid mistake. BTW in this case the neighbor just knocked the kid down and took a look at who he was. Offered him a beer and the kid passed out on the couch lol.

Typical Americans. GET OFF MY LAWN. BAM. Oh wait, that was my neighbors kid...

BTW @OZ-T, you can't even carry a handgun in Canada without stating a destination and when it's coming back, and it can't be loaded or unsafed until it's at it's destination right? So if you haul around a pistol, you are hauling around a paperweight. Anyone hear going into bear country alone keeps a high powered rifle. To be perfectly honest, no handgun is a for sure against that size of animal.

Yup. Bear spray is legal here but you have to only carry it on your person when you are likely to encounter a bear. Carrying it around otherwise is illegal.

Bottom line, if you are making a car survival kit to get through a snowed in night or mechanical failure, the handgun is likely the last thing you will need. I'd replace that with a SPOT device if you're really paranoid. That way you know someone knows where you are when you hit the help button.

TBH I expected this thread to be about tools, not weapons. But hey, Murica.

Oh, and yes I know a knife is a tool and a firearm is a tool. Thx.

Yeah. It seems the moment on here someone even mentions a gun it becomes a concealed carry hi power big rounds circle jerk. Kinda sad.

Like I said, i dont understand it. Here I do not have to worry about bear. I live among the nastiest predators. I want the most effective tool to protect myself and family. Maybe bear spray works perfectly against bear, but until there is crackhead spray i will stick to my guns. (no pun intended :) ) I have to worry about meth heads, crack heads, and thugs. Not too many drunk kids running around accidently breaking in front doors. Your in my home, its not on accident. And yea Murica..... Yall just still pissed your gov owns you, yet as of today, we are still somewhat a free people. In TX that is. Some parts of this country are little different. Actually I am loading the boat, packing up 6 different guns, my bow and headed out to a primative camp with my son. Dove season is around the corner, then archery season, then rifle season. Want to make sure everything is in order. Will not be filling out any paperwork for my side arms, or colt m-4 or shot guns while i travel to camp. Yep murica, I will take it, and love it. Still free baby :) still free

    My thoughts exactly...

I don't need to quantify my freedom by waving a handgun or M4 around. You know that's the same way the Africans signify freedom when they are killing their own in the streets right :D. Anyways, I've said enough. This wasn't about personal protection in your home, it was about surviving a break down or something else that happens on the side of the road.

I hope for your sons sake you do take gun safety seriously. 6 weapons in a boat for two people is a bit overkill for any weekend even if your a marine.

My son is only 2. He aint old enough to shoot yet. :) Besides that is like saying having an adjustable wrench, a set of metric, a set of standard and rachet and sockets in the same tool box is overkill. Have to have the right tool for the job.

So I keep this one for killing people, this one for prairie dogs, this one for gophers, this on for cougars, this one for bear, and this one just cause I like it lol.

There's a difference between bringing a couple of socket sets and bringing a snap on tool box on a road trip.

At 2 gun safety is even more important. Isn't hard to knock a safety to on.

All of this I agree with.

I don't think I said anything about shooting or shooting at someone on my lawn. Shooting at or to wound just opens up doors for lawsuits since everyone loves to sue everybody now. If you're breaking through my door regardless of how old you are, I'll use my most effective tool and end it there before you go into other peoples homes and evolve into the most dangerous predator there is. Where I live, we have 15 and 16 year old kids who go out and actually shoot other people for their "gang".

Back on topic, it's a good idea for everybody to pack a med kit in their vehicle. Even if it's just a small basic one for minor aches and pains. You never know how things will go on the trail. May twist your ankle.
