It happens, especially when you have MT tires or RWD. Coming out from a stop light if you gun the pedal to a high degree the truck is gonna say "may I have this dance?"
I believe that is what happened here; I got a little trigger happy at a wet turn once and did a nice drift but it's all about your means of correction, to not over or under correct.

Once you start the skid in lots of water, boom, it happens...normally, something just prior to the 'boom' causes the result, just sayin', over 50 years of driving, I got a feel for the road and mishaps...I have hit a few things that were because of playing in the rain or snow..especially when I was a youngin'...

Michelin LTX ms2 with 70000 on the tires

I got out with out a scratch bruise or anything.... It did its job and protected me, which why I got it.

wasn't stupid, I let off because its blind as soon as you go through the light, it slightly curves, but my tires weren't doing when I accelerated, but as soon as I let off they did. This is why I am wondering what happened. I figured drive slow and let off and I won't spin...but that is wrong

70,000 on your tires, could be the problem, no tread left to speak of...that is a bit of damage...

Most likely the problem. Not enough tread for those conditions.

He's saying the brush guard did more damage to your front end just for being there, and from what I see it definitely did.

So you're saying right after the light there's a slight turn in the road? You let off the gas cause you felt the tires not spinning - you probably had high rpms going, you should've stayed on the pedal at a very minimum instead of "pumping" it. Oh and also the used up tires come into play.

depth of tread, even if there is some left, you were at the end of life, hydroplaning is a whole lot easier on worn tires...

I just bought it to protect my life in an event like this. not the truck.

well I did not want to go fast in a turn, that's why I let off when I did. I was about to brake right before I got loose, glad I didn't.

I was planning to get a new set when I got my school refund, but it looks like itll be spent on repaying the deductible and rental car

Really? As more information becomes available, like 70,000 miles on his tires and just recently disclosed, that alone is a BIG contributing factor in the skid department...

Yep, I think we just came across the big lesson here. I've never been a max life tire guy. I have nothing against those that do, I've just always bit the bullet early to keep good rubber under my vehicles, even before we could easily afford to. If your gonna max them out, you have to stay aware of your tire wear and make additional adjustments for the road conditions.

Live and learn Op, like many have said here, if not all then many of us, have all been there. Good luck getting your truck repaired.

    Sorry about your ride.
What or how is done. Get a quote form your adjuster have a shop you know/trust do the work if your not comfortable trying it yourself.
Just went trough kinda the same but in snow:D.
My insurance quote was low but the shop deals with insurance for adjustments. I keep my ride as clean as I can the shop refused certain after market parts for fit. Also FYI the adjuster quote is the least the insurance expects to pay. Had hail damage on daughters car paintless dent repair so they said! Guy told my girl he'd do it in a day quote was 3. She told ins. she could have it done cheaper! Ins. company said they would have to inspect the work before paying?
They didn't look at it after spending way more than quote.
