I haven't heard of much tailgate theft in my neck of the woods but I work offshore and park at docks and heliports for extended periods of time so I think I'll go the route of the hoseclamp for now until I decide on installing a bed cover or not. Very useful post thanks.

the pop and lock works great. love the stock look too. first time hearing of the hose clamp method, but will probably use that too. can never be to safe. seeing as how my last car got broken into.
i live in southern calif and you always have these f'ers driving around scoping out cars/trucks to break in and steal stuff.

Mine didn't have any kind of plastic sleeve and lifted off the truck with ease when slightly opened and tilted to align the slot.

I did the hose clamp mod. as well for when the Undercover is not on the truck to lock up belongings as well as the tailgate. ;)

This sleeve is painted the body color. If it wasn't rotated I would have thought that is was metal. However, I can see that it is actually white plastic.

FYI, my pop n lock never rusted. It's the road salt and sand splashing up on the back of the truck clogging the keyhole. I couldn't even get it cleaned out by spraying cleaner/lubricate in and picking at it. I finally gave up and junked it. I'm just glad I didn't have it locked over the winter. Not sure how I would have gotten the tailgate off if it had seized up while locked. Would be a great product if it had some sort of dust cap or cover for the key hole.

This thread got me thinking. I just checked craigslist here in Fresno, two Tacoma tailgates popped up for $350 a piece. No phone number. Makes me wonder. I think when I finally get my Tacoma I'll etch the VIN number on the tailgate somewhere hidden (maybe a couple of places) so if mine gets stolen and I see one pop up on craigslist I can go "buy" it back...with interest.

My truck has the tamper proof Vin.# ID stickers on the doors, hood, tailgate, ect. and the windows are also marked. Wouldn't hurt to put a etched something that only you would know somewhere that you could tell the law when you went to pick it up.

Just means that honest people and shops aren't going to risk it and theives don't care. "Locks only keep honest people honest" as the saying goes.
