Dumb question - missing oil filter plug?

I paid off my truck this week and after my first disappointing dealer service last time (after 5 years of good service) I decided to treat the truck to a Mobil 1 change and start doing it myself. Easy peasy except I've seen it said there is a plug under the filter drain. Turns out mine is missing because when I unscrewed the filter, it immediately drained down into the truck. No big deal - going forward I will use a cup to catch the oil, but is there any reason I need the plug? It doesn't leak a drop of oil so the plug can't be more than a drain for the oil catch bracket. Surely it doesn't hurt that my plug is missing, right??

 

Actually nevermind - I searched here & didn't find an answer but a Google search brought me back here & it's been asked before. No plug, no worries.

 

I was going to say we don't have a plug there. You just need an empty water bottle to catch the excess oil.

 

Same happened to me, not necessary but I found a rubber screw head protector that fit.

 

Empty beer bottle works perfectly : )
