Aftermarket roof rack

I want to slap a roof rack on Mr. taco - anyone know which brands best fit/ best install? (dbl. cab)

 

ARB has a roof rack system made by Thule for their rooftop tent part#TA23010. Yakima also makes a rack for the Tacoma http://www.yakima.com/dealers/default.aspx?fitmycar

I'm pondering getting a Yakima rack for my D-cab to carry 2 kayaks.

I just bought the guys bumper. rack looked good

 

I've always thought rack systems with clips that grab inside the door frame look kinda like an afterthought. I'm wondering if these Yakima rails would fit in the channels where our factory racks go.

It would give a factory look with several times the weight capacity of the factory racks. You could bolt them right through the existing rubber strip and roof. Those of you who have gotten under there, are there pre-drilled holes in our roofs if we don't have a factory rack? A big plus for something like this (for me) is that you could have perfectly matching rack systems on your cab and camper. And if you ever wanted to remove them you could do an ugly patch job and get new rubber strips to hide everything.

There was a guy over @ toyotanation who did this


He mounted a Thule TK Fit Kit right into the existing factory location for use with some towers and load bars.
Plus he had a channel strip like the yakima one you linked on his truck cap.

I wonder how the yakima strip would work since the tacoma roof isn't completely flat?
Anyway, there is a photo of the strips removed fwiw.

Anyone have thoughts regarding getting the OEM rack compared to Yakima or Thule racks?

I want to put a basket up there for camping trips and also be able to hold MTB or snowboards. Also with the basket would be nice to hold the spare.

It doesn't matter about removing it or not...I would rather have one that has all the functions...I know the OEM ones store away which is nice.

Are the aftermarket ones hard to remove on an off? I don't mind leaving it on if it is more functional than the OEM, able to hold more weight and stuff like that.

 

Can you post the link directly to his write up? I can't find it... The idea looks awesome. I have a Yakima rack now, and it scratches the shit out of my door jambs. Where the feet sit there is no damage. I wonder if Yakima has a similar product to the Thule thing...

I was just plowing around on the thule web site, and using their web fit program it kept coming up saying that they did not have any racks for Tacoma double cabs.

Does anyone have a thule model number / part number that they use? I like the one on Simons Mom's truck.

I like the idea of the one in this thread that uses the factory mount location and looks like the load bars can be changed out or taken off as needed. That is a Yakima setup I think.

I just installed an OEM rack and I like it. I could always add a basket to it if I wanted to. And it was a REALLY good deal thanks to Benca1.

 

The Yakima's are easy to take off

 

I like the look of the Yakima over Thule but I think Thule has a life time warrenty; the OEM looks ok but its a bit flimzy for me.

 

i have had yakima racks on every car i have owned since i started biking back in 2002. my jeep, solara, lexus GS, and my wifes highlander have all had one on at some point and IMO they are slightly better than thule in looks and ease of use. just be sure to routinely clean the bottom of the qtowers and remove the rack when it wont be in use for an extended period of time. you'll love it.

 

The Yakima's are lifetime warranty too. If you are odering a Yakima rack though the fairing they recomend is actually a little to short and doesn't run across the whole top. I bought the the next longer one and it fits perfect.
