You said industry, would automotive journalists not be considered such?

Right, and I would call a new exterior, new interior, new engine, new transmission, just to name a few, to be a redesign. It's a truck...there is only so radical the design change can be. The 1st gen was so ridiculously outdated towards the end, that of course there was going to be a bigger change going into the second gen than there was going from second gen to third. Especially since the second gen had a refresh that really made it look much more modern.

Nope....manufactures are part of industry such as Ford Chevy Toyota. Anyone can be a journalist or call themselves journalist such as TFL on youtube

Internally, pretty much everything points to it not being a redesign or new generation, but rather a mid-generation update. Externally, Toyota from a marketing standpoint has been pushing heavily to call it a new generation. Toyota is pushing mid-model updates further and further as of late (2011 Avalon, 2013 LS460, 2014 Tundra, 2015 Camry to name a few), so it is really starting to blur the lines of update and new generation.

Toyota Canada documents calls it a MMC (mid-model change).
It is not getting a new parts catalog (instead, 2016 is just a new model year of an existing catalog).
The chassis codes are still the same (TRN245/265, obviously the V6 gets new codes).
New car features book is still in PDF format, not the new-model format used for all new models introduced after 2009.

It's a heavily updated 2nd gen. Whether that makes it a new generation is somewhat up for debate, and this has been hashed and rehashed multiple times over the past 8 months. Still, back when much of this discussion was going on it wasn't clear yet what was new and what wasn't. As more and more information is released I find it becomes clearer and clearer that it is less a new generation than an updated 2nd gen.

There are the arguments that "how much can you update a truck really" and it has updated bodywork and a new driveline, but by definitions used in the world of Toyota, it's not a new generation. With the exception of what Toyota USA has told journalists of course, which does make a pretty strong case for it.

In the Toyota-verse though, it would never be considered a new generation based on the details. It's like when the new model comes out and it's "all-new!" Haha.

Oh well, it is what it is.

That's pretty much how the auto industry is now for most cars. These days, seems most new generations of a model are revolutions and not massive, huge changes.

Actually to an educated person with some thought it does. I ride motocross, so if I sell motocross gear but dont ride motocross im not part of the motocross industry. But in sake of not arguing you win.

Yeah, that's exactly the kind of stuff I'm talking about with Toyota pushing hard for it to be accepted as a new truck and not just an update to the public. Good example.

Refresh, redesign, update, gen 3... who cares? It's a 2016 that has differences from the 2015. If you like what it offers great. If you don't you better get a 2015 if you want something new because they'll be gone soon.

This thread is like fishing, most guys don't care they catch anything, they just want out of the house, peace and quiet with your buddies and a cooler full of beer. Therefore we don't care about the new model, just want to talk about it.

To my eyes it simply looks like a mid-model refresh. The body panels all have the same general shape and appear to have been simply re-stamped with new creases/curves. It looks like you could swap the body panels from a 2015 and use them on a 2016 and vice-versa. Sure they gave it a new engine and tranny(oops, is that not pc?) and the interior is vastly improved. Is anything different suspension-wise? They even use the old plastic pickup bed(because Toyota knows best). 2016 Taco is, as others have stated, a Gen 2.5.

2009 Ram 1500: All new design
    2014 GMC/Chevy 1500: All new design
2015 Ford F150: All new design
    2016 Tacoma: Mid-model refresh

How do you know they don't work? Weather Tech says so, or what?

I don't, I'm assuming, however my post was basically more about poking fun on the the definition whether is a new design or redesign.
