5k intervals in a cold climate while on warranty isn't a waste of money. It protects the warranty and your truck doesn't run dry during cold starts like conventional would do. Just a thought you might not of considered.

I also run Pennzoil Platinum. I sell Mobil and run Pennzoil lol. The natural gas synthetic is just perfectly pure, while conventional synthetics are just continually processed until they meet the synthetic definition API has set out. In other words, crude derived synthetic will always have some percentage of non conformity, where natural gas derived synthetic is nearly perfect in a molecular conformity sense. The better the stuff you start with the better the final product will be. Shell bucked the trend to make synthetics cheaper and lower quality that Mobil and others have been following and decided to.redefine what a true synthetic is to those who know something created in a controlled environment is more pure than something manipulated and filtered.

Yep, it is good stuff and I now swear by it. I am slowly switching everything over to it. My wife's Explorer, my Bronco and my Mustang will all get it soon. Only thing that wont is my 7.3 Powerstroke because Pennzoil doesn't make synthetic diesel oil yet. I just run regular Rotella 15w40 in that at 3k intervals. I never drive it much unless I need to tow, them 15 quart oil changes aren't much fun!

Btw I'm going to just say, in regards to whichever oil you choose, while I firmly believe that what Pennzoil is doing with their synthetics is the best for our engines there is nothing wrong with Mobil, Amsoil, or other synthetics. All synthetics offer superior detergent packages and better cold weather performance. Not to mention the ability of synthetic to retain it's lubrication properties after being pushed hard in difficult applications. Running on the proper interval, either factory or determined by Blackstone testing, with any synthetic should result in the engine outlasting most of thr other components on our trucks.

Can't agree more. With as cold as it gets here, I won't run anything but synthetic for those subzero starts. It also protects well in extreme heat on 100 degree summer days sitting in traffic with the AC blasting. I plan to switch all other components of my truck to synthetic oils soon as well, transmission, t-case, and both diffs.

aires 3D mats, scan gauge II, rear differential breather relocation, and bakflip G2 bed cover.
The reason that sludge is in there is from running the engine hot from the blown headgasket. It has nothing to do with how often that oil was changed.

Amen. Close the thread please - this oil debate has gone too far and I am going to punish myself for actually reading it in it's entirety.

How long do you think the head gasket was blown to accumulate that much sludge?

I should add that I drive roughly 6k a year, so I change oil twice a year. Too often? Too expensive? I don't think so, especially since a lot of my 'trips' are from my shop to town, 2 miles. Do my work, drive back another 2 miles. Repeat, sometimes many times a day.

You ok with that, Ostrichsak ? You were waiting for my reply after all. Now I wait for yours. ;)

Not sure what the recommended OCI is. I could probably stretch it to once a year, but why? Less than $30 a shot, which is less than 5 bucks a month. If I want to be more frugal than that, I need to kil.. er have my wife meet an early exit.

I'm kidding of course, I love her dearly and would be lost without her. Truth.

^Wonder what the typical OCI is for taxis. Maybe they go 3 mo. regardless of milage?

I see a lot of Camry Hybrids in my area - cab drivers claim they cut the fuel bill by half compared to the old Crown Vics.

I could see them easily getting that much savings.

I think a lot of Cab companies change the oil on hours operated, similar to what we do on our farm equipment. They keep a log of how long each cab is out, which is easy if you track drive hours which you have to by law, and then they change the oil after a certain hour interval.

^Did the Hemi engines actually have hemispherical combustion chambers?
