2015 backup camera

New to the forum. I just traded my 98 regular cab 4x4 after 17 years for a 2015 base access cab. I have the Etune radio and convenience package.
I have a warning on the radio when starting the truck about watching the camera while backing, warning label on the rear passenger side of the bed about disconnecting before removing tailgate, and 4 wires coming out of the connector under the bed on the passenger side.
All of this leads me to belive I just need the camera and it is plug and play. My question is this: I can find the camera for 2014s right now, but no 2015s listed. Does anyone know if the 14 will fit or did they change the rear latch this year? My guess is they are the same?

Thanks, I figured they were the same. It's crazy that they just don't throw the camera in with the convenience package. It can't cost them much. They installed everything but the module itself.

 

Also have a new Access Cab, if you are successful at the 2015 camera install, could you make a recommendation on which camera package or parts to purchase? I've looked at fleabay and am not certain what I've seen includes what is necessary to be plug n play. Thank you

 

I have a 2015 coming, AC with Convenience Package also and might look into the reverse camera if it's indeed plug and play!

I have a 2015 base/utility model access cab without the camera. Warning came on at start up. Yellow sticker by the tailgate. You should be good to go.

I ordered and just installed the camera OEM part

86790-04021. It was a simple plug and play, about 10 minutes to take the cover off the tailgate. You'll need a torx wrench (I forgot what size? T-30?)and 10mm socket. Easy cheesy. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any smoking deals, so about $400 for the part.

I'm going this route. I ordered the one from camera source and it requires you to run their harness to behind the bumper. When I took the tailgate cover off I realized I was wired up to the handle so I am returning the camera source one and going with OEM. They were great to deal with and I recommend them, just a matter of preference on my part, didn't want to rip out a factory harness when I didn't have to - I would have saved ~$200 though. May be T-30 not T-49 though, can't remember.

 

Oops. Yes, not a T-40 Torx, probably T-30. The T-40 I used to install the tailgate protector. Smaller one needed for removing the tailgate cover.

Back to camera parts, the OEM requires no additional wiring. You simply remove the camera cover that was there and bolt on the camera, plug the 6-pin plug and you're good to go.

 

I put the camera in from Camera Source and it worked like a charm. Not much wire removal at all to install their camera. Route through tailgate and plug in behind bumper. Very simple, works great.

New (to me) 2015 Access Base owner here. If I am reading correctly, I DON'T have to pull the radio and fish any wiring through the dash? Just install the camera in the tail gate? Which brand of camera to be sure? TIA Rob

Correct. No work to be done in the dash or console. Just take the cover off the tailgate with the torx wrench and socket. Plug and play. My 2015 base access cab took about 15 minutes to take apart, plug in, and put back together. See my post above.

 

I am not 100% sure but I think the convenience package gets you pre-wired for the camera. Pop the tailgate cover and follow the harness to underneath by the spare tire and make sure it plugs in somewhere and also make sure it has ALL of the wires. Do a search and you will see what I am talking about, I think you need 4 wires or something like that that continue on from the tailgate/spare tire harness connection back to the head unit.

I installed my OEM one 3 weeks ago and it took longer to get the tools out. There are 2 different length screws for the tailgate cover so pay attention, not hard to figure out after the fact but it is one less thing to worry about.

I have installed the Rostra 250-8214 rear view camera on my 2015 Tacoma Access Cab with the convenience package. The truck was pre-wired for the camera as stated by others in the thread. The Rostra kit was $160 with shipping from SavingLots.com. Best price I could find on the web. The factory camera sells discounted online for about $450, so the Rostra kit is the way to go, which replaces everything from the connector under the bed to the camera on the tailgate latch. Installation is so easy that if you have ANY mechanical skill it is a no-brainer. I am very meticulous, and even with that I was done in 45 minutes. I used all the original cable stays inside the tailgate and the pass through protectors between the tailgate and bed. No electrical splices, and only used a T30 driver, 10mm socket, some electrical tape (to secure harness to factory cable stays) and some foam tape for rattle protection. Once connected the camera is fully plug and play. Put truck in reverse and Entune displays camera view.
