4x4 is still shift on the fly with the knob, isn't it? I hope so, because I sure do. Otherwise I hear you about the differences between 1st and 2nd gen. My 1st gen felt like a nasty little Tonka truck and would scramble over anything with ease. It felt indestructible. My 2nd gen feels more like a Honda Pilot and that I would smash things up if I really wheeled it hard. The mud flaps breaking off the first time I went off road didn't exactly give me a warm fuzzy feeling about wheeling it.

If you're going into 4H you can do it on the fly. As long as your are travelling 60ish mph or less, or 100km/h or less. If you are going to 4L you need to stop and put it into neutral and then turn the nob into 4L. This is for auto trans. The Manual trans is a little different. You can be going like 2mph to switch into 4L. Its in the book, I was just browsing through it last night.

No regrets at all. Bought a 13 camry, traded it on a 14 DCLB prerunner, traded that on a 15 AC 4x4. Wife has a camry if we need a car.

Same thing as OP here. Have a 2005 Matrix and just bought a 2015 Tacoma. I kept the Matrix for the time being, may use it in summer time to commute to work for the MPG and keep miles down on the Tacoma. After driving the Tacoma, don't know if I'll be able to pry my self out of it to enter the Matrix. Loved that car and still do, but a brand new truck.... love it.

So no I don't regret it all, but I guess since I didn't trade in my car, my response may not be valid. Still wanted to comment since I'm similar to OP with Matrix to Tacoma :-D

Bought a CPO Audi S4 with about 18,000 miles on it. New brakes at 25k was $1400, thermostat failed around 36k, and at 42k brakes were on the wear indicators again. My driving style doesn't include a lot of braking - my G35 would go 40k on a set of pads.

Traded the S4 for the Tacoma. The S4 was a fantastic road/touring car and I'll always miss the acceleration and handling, but the Tacoma is better suited for everything else, is less expensive to maintain, and will last longer.

Yeah, same as my Gen 1. The Gen 1 had a lever by the gearshift for 4x4, I gotta admit it was more satisfying than the little switch.

I went from a Porsche 911 to my Tacoma, and while I do miss the 911 sometimes, I have more fun with the Tacoma. Also, I'm not nearly as concerned/stressed out by trying to keep the Tacoma scratch/dent/chip free.

I went from a Quad Cab Ram to a 2012 Camry SE to my Tacoma.

I traded the Ram because it was at the end of its useful life. I decided on the Camry because I wanted a "practical reliable car to haul the kids around in" awhile the Camry is a great car(highly recommend on to anyone who likes owning a car) I hated it. I kept that car less than a year, and traded it in on my Tacoma. Oddly enough the super Toyota resale I was able to drive that camry for almost a year, and traded it in for more than I bought it for. It was still hard for me to make the trade, my mantra has usually been "drive them until the wheels fall off then buy a new one" but I couldn't take the car anymore and my wife was tired of hearing my complain about the car.

So the answer is no, I do not regret one bit buying my Tacoma. I did however regret buying a car!

Regret it? No... Miss it at times Hell Yes! Went from an Infiniti G35 to a 15 Taco 4dr Pro as I am winding down my business and will eventually sell my 1st gen Tundra so wanted something that would do truck stuff and still haul a few extra folks. The Taco is fun, but definitely not the G35 on the twisties!

Best combo is a truck/SUV daily and a protect/cheap sports car on the side.

It's on the fly. Just let off the gas wait a second and don't be going over 60.

If it's been said already, my apologies.

What I would regret is going from a Tacoma to a car.

I had a 2013 Accord Sport before my 2015 Tacoma. Round about the same time I got a new job with a much short commute (9 vs 25 miles each way), and started camping every few weeks with my sons' troop. So I was excited to finally be able to have a pickup as a daily driver.
But that Accord... loved it. It was an excellent commuter, still think it looks great, excellent manual transmission, perfect sporty/smooth ride quality. Plus its interior was MUCH more modern. But it's a truck. It can be simple.

I wish I had space and budget for both. But I have no regrets about the truck. It's proven very, very useful, and I don't worry about curbing the wheels :)

Had a '03 wrx with 850cc injectors feeding an FP 18g turbo that made over 330 awhp, went to a 350z with a built motor (ported heads, 264 cams, LT headers, etc...) made over 300 rwhp, and now I'm in the taco. I miss going fast but I'm willing to bet I'd be in prison for some of the things that were done in those 2 cars if I still had them... Plus the truck is much more useful.

Ha thats funny. I love my Matrix. Was actually considering buying my first new vehicle next year but after reading all the hassles and complaints from people buying new i don't see any reason to give up my trusty Matrix for $30k+ of something I'm not sure is even going to work.
