Yea i have only seen like..two people between here and ExpoP that have failed. I don't think its that common. But always a possibility.

My 4wd acted up this last trip. Wouldn't engage sometimes. No idea why. But the more i did it the better it got. Was back to normal by the end. Was odd. Probably just not used enough. But not sure.

 

I've had mine behave like that too.

The more I use it, the faster it engages. When I go a long time with out using it, it can be stubborn and act like it wont engage.

The moral of this story is.. Use it or lose it.

 

its funny because i almost only use 4wd in it. Just sits too much over school..

 

Check this out. I think this is called the ABS ring. It is part of the rear axle bearing and seal stuff.

I'm pretty sure its not supposed to look like that.

 

Good thing you removed it. Less crap to go wrong.

 

Ha, I've been told you cant run without it. My truck does not have ABS from the factory.

FWIW, that piece was brand new. Only 2300 miles on it.

was the bearing a Koyo?

 

The markings indicate it was Timken

Well actually, both sides are now aftermaket. Alpine Toyota said the earliest they could get an OEM bearing was Saturday or maybe even Monday. I could not afford to wait.

In either case, this Timken bearing should not have failed so quickly, OEM or not. I suspect it was not properly installed but it may be difficult to prove that. The report from the Toyota tech was that the bearing failure caused the seal to fail which I think is the opposite of what occurred originally.

Are you certain that Koyo is the OEM brand for this application?

 

Most timken bearings for our trucks are actually koyo. Just varies on application, not sure if they have a partnership or what.

 

I know all the bearings I put in the diff's are koyo. Couldn't say on axle yet

 

Timken is a fine bearing. Nothing wrong with them. Use them all the time up north in much bigger equipment.

 

true. But Mike Paid for OEM is the main point i suppose.

 

Based on what Chris @Redneck92 said earlier, do we know for sure that Timken is not OEM for this application.

I have to agree with what Steve @woodnick is saying, a Timken bearing should not have failed so quickly. There seems to be more going on. I suppose it could be incorrect installation but can't be certain.

Could it be the axle tube or the shaft?

 

i seriously doubt the housing is bent. Or axle shaft. But its always possible, more so the shaft then the housing. not sure how you'd check that just to eliminate it.

 

Both shops that have worked on it have said the axle shaft is not bent.
