lol, I'm already 30. Luckily at my past job I maxed out 401K contributions and the company did profit sharing which was really generous. I quit everything two years ago and decided to knock out my degree. One more year to go.

Nope, not fun at all. My other computer, where I was editing the site, just decided to restart on it's own. Damn PC's.

I have your koozies ready to go. Just to be safe I'm going to take the envelope to the post office in the morning to make sure it's not too thick. I've had that problem before.

Is it cheaper to buy a house or build one? Anyone wanna give me a quick summary on what one would need to be prepared for and how much to start saving and what not to be ready to build/buy my own place in ~5 years?

Well for location I have a couple options. I myself have at least 13 acres of land that will be in my own name but that land is in the middle of nowhere. I would have the river in my backyard tho(a few acres back).
Or 20 acres on some open land. Not as far in the middle of nowhere but still 20 miles from the closest town.
Both would require a water well installed and house built. I'd want at least a 2100sq. Ft single story house. And I have no idea how much sq.ft cost is.
But I wouldn't have to buy land.

Or buy a used house in the small town of Columbus with more than likely less than an acre of land.

The 20 and 13 acres are still gonna be mine. Either way.

Just don't know if I should use that to my advantage and build a house or just keep the land to have it and buy a house in town.

Well I'd be living in it for a long time and thats how big the house I grew up in is. I think its a nice size for a small family.

Building cost will be $80+ a square foot on your own land. The farther out you are the more the cost will go up due to added labor cost from paying someone extra extra to go farther out.
Dont forget about a power source. Running electricity lines from a pole is not cheap. Consider solar and or wind power. Instead of a water well check out rain catch systems. My buddy has one on their new house they just built on the ranch. Water gets filtered through a multi stage deal and is drinkable. Just a little rain will provide a lot of water. Tankless water heater and a large propane tank will set you up nice. Plus you are off the grid from city services.

Get your own place and see how much you like paying the bills. It costs more to heat/cool bigger houses.

If the space is designed well with little to no wasted square feet even a 1600 square foot place feels large.
