If you have 2 wd, I found you can get away with it. If you are hauling around a 4 by 4, the 4 is really working hard. Will it go 100 mph with 4 wd...well, maybe but I never tried. But you had better have a long stretch of road and a tail wind if you try. I had a taco 2Wd 4 cylinder and it was spunky, not fast with 2 wd. But capable and It was adaquate. I tried out a 4 by 4 access cab in 2014 with a 4 cylinder and I had no desire to either add any cargo or try to go vary fast. I doubt the new one is any better at high speed with the weight and drag of 4 wd.

Well it is a truck, and the need for high speed 4x4 use is pretty slim compared to the average owners needs.

Most of the 2.7 haters only say they drove one briefly, while the 2.7 fans drive theirs everyday.

    Interesting.

I had seven Toyota trucks. Three sixes and 4, 4 cylinders. Two were 2 wd, 2 were the 4 by 4 taco 2.7 4 cylinder. All were manual because the autos I tried out were deadly slow with 4 wd and auto. The next 4 wd Taco was a six..

I don't disparage 4 cylinders in 2 wd and think the base 2016 Taco in 2 wd will be a decent performer with the 6 speed auto.

    But...
The speed limits around here on highway have been raised to 70 mph in most places and 75 mph in some others. Trying to drive the speed limits with a 4 cylinder and 4 wd of a friend, drove the gas mileage below that of the six I have.

    This.^^^^^^

And if I may add speculation. The 3rd gen redesign was rushed a bit. Not rushed by today's standards. But from what I've seen (let's start a rumor) past tacoma redesigns were years in the making. This one may have been closer to 1/2 or 1/3 the time.

I think they put all the effort into the 6 and said forget about the 4 for now. They will switch the engine in a few years. Not making predictions, but Toyota is still contemplating the 4. It may be a slight improvement. But it will still be a 4 and just a plain ol 4. It will not match 6 cyl speed or towing

It isn't meant to compare to a V6 for speed or towing.

    What are you guys smoking?

Ah, I see. It's another circle jerk by guys who think a V6 is the greatest ever.

    Got it.

Still coming up a little short on the measuring contest, but whatever makes you feel better.

Who said the v6 is the best engine ever? It's just substantially better than the presently offered 4.

Inflation, popular demand, priced against competitors. You as a consumer have a right to say no and buy used.

My truck is a 4 banger. Might be a first gen, but it pulls itself fine to me. I pull 1500lbs all the time going any speed I want. I'm not scared to get in mud and rev it up. Its the 4 cylinder Toyota was founded on. Just bigger.

I can keep speed, drop it in 3rd. Did you know that? Just wondering, have you drove one?

I've owned 4 Toyota pickups/Tacoma's all 4cyl. None of them were powerful, just adequate. Not bad motors, not unreliable motors, just not powerful motors. Adequate is the word of the day. I'm happy your all happy with your 4cyl's and I hope you go buy another one. But I will be opting for the 6cyl.

Luckily power vs mpgs is something we no longer have to worry about in the 2016, unless your on a budget like outkast pointed out.
