Does your Tacoma make this noise?

I've been dealing with this noise since I purchased the truck NEW 1 month ago. It only occurs on cold starts, once it warms up after 3min the noise eliminates. Sounds like a diesel in the morning. Can't say I heard it the day I took it off the lot because I was too full of excitement, but the next couple of days of ownership, I was noticing it more and more and it finally bothered me enough to do some research of my own and see if this is a normal noise for these Tacomas. To my findings, this noise is somewhat common through a few users on here and on some of the Youtube videos I've come across. BUT, not everyone experiences this noise with their Tacoma.
I've read all 32 pages of username "Hotrod53" thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/13-v6-4500-miles-and-my-motor-may-be-shot.317054/page-32
He had the same noise and Toyota tore his motor apart with an end result of buying back his truck through the lemon law. I just got my truck back from the dealership yesterday with an outcome of the noise being "normal". They went on to tell me that they've had many complaints inside the dealership in the past about this issue that they've contacted Toyota themselves and Toyota responds back with "Normal".
When I asked where the noise was coming from, the tech couldn't answer. Just said that the 4.0L VVTI motor has a lot going on inside, thus creating a lot of noises. The tech went as far as telling me if you call Toyota directly, they even have a audio clip of the noise via telephone with the response of "normal". I also go about telling him my neighbors 2012 does NOT make this noise, of course he had no answer to that other than "some are louder than others".

My next step is to take my truck to a few more dealers to get other opinions. I'm not happy about this at all, especially coming from a brand new truck...there's no excuse for a $30k truck to make this noise - any new truck for that matter! It's been driving me nuts. I don't know how they think they can get away with telling someone "oh that's normal noise" and can't even have an answer as to why the engine makes this noise and pin point where the noise is coming from. If all the dealers are going to feed me the "normal" story, I'm going to fight Toyota for the lemon law. This motor has been in the Tacoma since 05', seems like most of the complaints are from the later models (12'-15'). I also want to know why Toyota tore apart username "Hotrod53" motor last year trying to find the issue when his noise is suppose to be "normal"

My question to you all is, how many of you guys experience this noise on your 2gen Tacoma?

Remember hearing it was the oil pump. One guy on here fought to have his replaced and the noise went away.

Some techs are about as useful as nipples on a dude.

Mine never makes that sound ...... Didnt you pop the hood and try pin pointing where it's coming from? I know shit about engines but maybe the emissions pump is making that sound till it warms up?

They also lemon lawed his truck because they tore the thing apart. New oil pump, new engine, the whole nine. There are dudes on here with the same noise and zero issues. I understand where you are coming from though.

Oil pump or not, dealer states Toyota says it's normal. That was over a year ago when that guy had his oil pump replaced. If it was indeed the fix, Toyota would know the remedy by now since the dealer claims they receive so many Tacoma's with this noise. So Toyota knows about the problem, they're either being lazy and denying the fact that there is an actual problem or they can't find a fix for the problem. Someone is lying to someone, I just want it fixed! And yes, the tech I spoke with yesterday was about as useful as my nipples, you got that right!

I dropped the truck off Saturday and described my issue to the service manager. Without hearing my truck, he right up front told me Toyota has come back and said this noise is normal. But, he'll have a tech meet with me on Monday to go over the noise just to be sure. Well, I met with the tech Monday and we indeed popped the hood, but he literally had nothing to say. He was speechless about the issue, and just told me even the other new ones on the lot make the noise, and, well....that was about it!

Yeah they jacked his truck up! But, I still don't get why Toyota gave his dealer permission to proceed with the fixes they preformed when Toyota themselves say it's normal. Why would they do that?
Whether or not this noise is only a nuisance or an actual issue that could cause long term failure, nobody seems to know. And that's where my problem lays. Yeah, all the trucks that do it run just fine now...but how do I know it's not going to do any harm if Toyota doesn't even have an answer to what it's caused by? How does this noise effect my resale?
That's what the lemon law is for... My Dad has gone through 5 lemons. Remember the "piston slap" that all the old GM motors made? GM bought back my Dad's truck because of that very same issue. Like Toyota, GM said it doesn't hurt the motor - it's normal for these engines. Kind of like the same scenario I'm dealing with right now with the Tacoma, but Toyota hasn't given me an answer..yet! We as the purchaser of these vehicles shouldn't have to live with this noise - that's why the lemon law exists. I'm not saying I have a case or not, and I'm definitely not counting my chickens...but Toyota isn't going to get off this easy by just blowing it over with the word "normal".
Like I said, I'm going to go to 3 surrounding dealers to get their say on this...maybe they know more than the first dealer I brought it to, I sure hope so! I just want the truck fixed, so I can sleep at night. If there is no such thing as a fix, then I certainly can't live with it.

My 13 made that noise and was otherwise very noisy aka clickity-clack like a rusty sewing machine. I've now used synthetic oil 3 changes 25k-35k, done my spark plugs at 30k, and 91 octane after the first 6 months its pretty quiet now. Still makes that noise a bit in the cold but goes away quickly. The clickity clack is better. I also had that TSB about "knock" which quieted things a bit more. I think if it's not truly broken don't worry about it.

My 2015 made noise something like that when I bought it last December. It had a constant ticking when it was warming up. Now it doesn't do it. So I blamed it on the cheap winter fuel. Most likely not your problem at this time of yr.

Try putting some premium fuel in it and see how it sounds.

Sub'd. Just heard it Friday night leaving my aunt's house. My sister who has an older louder car even commented, "is that normal?".

So, your dealer fixed the problem while other dealers are kissing it off as "normal". Sounds like you got a decent dealer.

My '13 did that, I'm the guy who had his truck lemoned. New idlers, new oil pump, new short block ..... new truck. Since that time I was told that they had a bad run of oil pumps that caused the noise but I'm not sure that I'm buying it. If your dealer checks it, he will find that while using a stethoscope, the noise will be loudest on the lower drivers side front of the engine.

Since my lemon case I've been hearing that Toyota says its normal. If you listen really close to my '14 you can faintly hear it but no one but me would be able to pick it out if you didn't know it was there. Thankfully im beyond that nightmare now, I just wish Toyota would fix my howling rear differential in my'14.

When dealerships feed you that "it is normal" bullshit, start talking about trading it in for another vehicle on their lot and see what they can offer you for your "normal" vehicle. They will avoid your obvious problem like the plague and point out minor scratches and missing valve caps on your wheels as they present to you an insulting offer on your "normal" trade-in.
