What kind of roads should I drive on while putting miles on my taco? I haul 4000 pounds (stock trailer and horse) and need to haul next week. I have two days to put on the miles and wondered if I should do highway or two lanes. I live in the mountains of NC and have a lot of road options. What would be best? I'm just gonna get in and drive. Thanks!

The thing I always hear about "break in" is vary the speed, do some stops, don't just sit on the highway at 1 speed all day for the first 500 miles or so.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. The engines are worked in at the factory.

I thought there were break-in guidelines in the manual, but I could be mistaken. If there are Toyota-recommended break-in guidelines, I'd try to get past the break-in period prior to towing so when it comes time to tow you can focus on that rather than how to properly break-in your truck.

Bought mine in Charlotte,NC, drove 2 lanes (including Tail of the Dragon) as much as possible coming back to Memphis, maybe did 300 on I-40 - basically for the axle gears, wasn't worried about the engine.

That was what I was wondering, 2 lane or interstate for most of my miles. Thinking of getting on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a spell -thought I would need to use the brakes too much, but if you did the Tail of the Dragon, you'd be using your brakes constantly.....

Actually minimal brake use - and not a whole lot of throttle either. Anything over 3000rpm was downshift no throttle. 58,000 miles later still happy, no mechanical problems, never had to add a drop of oil. Had never driven the Dragon before, so it was a recon mission and highly recommend it - but would be a lot more fun on a bike or in a Miata.

Bought it over the net from Town and Country - flew to Charlotte and drove home to Memphis. No dealership closer had a 6speed AC PreRunner, and all T&C had was a SR5 - love the Speedway Blue.

brakin a lot ...not on a bike :) Tail of the Dragon and 129 in North GA to Murphy NC... nice motorcycle territory... sorry I digress. Now a days I wouldn't sweat a "break in" too much.

That is true, varying driving speeds is best.

This comes straight from the owner's manual actually. Don't use cruise control. Vary speeds. Don't stomp on it excessively. Don't tow. Let is shift gears so it's not at the same RPM constantly.

I'm picking up a new truck this weekend and driving it about 650 miles the first day. I'll have to take the interstate for the first 170 miles but am considering the two lane after that. If I take that route it might end up being a bit of a long day, but the truck should be well on it's way to break-in by that evening. I, too, am more concerned about the driveline than the engine. These days materials and manufacturing techniques minimize engine wear even when new. The most critical engine break-in area is ring and valve seating which will occur with minimal material being shed. Just keep in mind that excessive heat is one of the worst things you can expose a new engine to and you'll be fine.
