My DC Tacoma has worked great for hauling a little one. He is two now and he loves riding in "daddy's truck" because I open the rear window and he can watch vehicles behind us. Car seats take up a lot of space, not sure if the one in my truck would fit in an extended cab truck.

Try out a car seat in the back seats of the double can. I have a 2 yr old. When new born, the car seat fit but the passenger seat was too close to the dashboard. Made it a bit uncomfortable. I got a smaller one and it fit perfect. Then my daughter grew and her feet started to hang out of the carseat, so it was time for 2 new car seats. My wife has a big nice carseat that has cup holders that only fits in her Camry. I got the smallest one possible to accommodate my 2 yr old in my truck. It's perfect.

I went with DC because I had some experience with the suicide doors on my RX8. Its not bad when the seat is front facing but even then to get to the seat, with the baby in hands, you need both door almost fully opened and its sometime impossible when cars are parked too close.

if it were me id take 8-10 k maybe10-12k and go buy the newest safest reliable car I could afford(and keep your truck as your truck), something like a really nice corolla. only use it when you have to, im sure a baby can fit in it. when the kid turns 16, you got something to learn on and give to them

Double cab for sure, I purchased mine when the wife and me were planning on having our first. I couldn't imagine trying to fit a rear facing in a access cab. I used a britax b-safe and positioned it in the middle so my wife could have full adjustment of her seat. Now my daughter is 16mnths and I have gone to a britax boulevard behind the passenger seat and there is plenty of room. We go camping a lot so having a truck to fit the baby, gear and two dogs was a must. Do what's best for your family but a double cab will make things easier.

I agree with most on here. An AC is great for storing junk in the back seat, not so great for pumans (puny-humans). That space is only going to get smaller as the kid gets bigger.

When our first was born, wife had a small four-door sedan and I had an SUV. Once we tried putting the car seat into the sedan (and she had to slide the seat all the way forward and tilt it up), the SUV became hers. At one point I had a first-gen Tacoma extended cab and had my daughter's forward-facing carseat in the back. She fit but couldn't see anything.

My kids are now elementary- and middle-school-aged. Before buying my 2015 DCSB I climbed into the back of an AC and determined it wasn't going to be the right vehicle in a couple more years, so I went the DC route instead. Prefer the look (and practicality) of the AC but didn't want to have to upgrade in a year or two.

    Good luck!

The double cab is still small for a car seat. To get our greco 30 car seat to lock in I have to move the passenger seat to the second notch back from the dash which leaves my, luckily tiny, wife without much room. That's what pushed us into getting an F150 for her while I kept my Tacoma. While in a pinch the Tacoma pulls family duty the F150 can fit a car seat, stroller, two adults, and a butt ton of groceries in the cab with one seat folded up and still have tons of room left. If you want I can take some pictures to show you how epic the rear seat size and utility is on a F150 over the Tacoma.

IMHO keep the Tacoma for yourself and find something else for the wife that is a better people mover.

    Congrats on the pregnant woman!

I have a DCLB. Full sized car seat in the back and two booster seats. Works fairly well. Assuming the front seats are not occupied very tall people...

Question: Do you plan on getting her pregnant a second, or third time? Mini-van may not seem that manly but if you plan on multiple kids a minivan is way... way easier to manage. My Tacoma only works because two of the kids are big enough for booster seats instead of full out car seats. You could get two car seats in a Tacoma and sacrifice the center rear seat. But you won't get three in there.

With a baby and 2 large dogs, DCLB at minimum. A stroller and a 60 lb dog take up half my short bed.

Hence why I said bigger vehicle. I've fit our Labrador, the kid in her seat, and a stroller inside the rear cab area of our F150. Something larger than the double cab, like a fullsize or SUV, will work better for his family.

Yeah a full sized truck would certainly be the 'best' option. I've been in a couple 2014/2015 Tundras and they are -=**MUCH**=- bigger inside than the Tacoma.

What does your wife drive?.. personally I would upgrade the oldest vehicle first.. if thats your Tacoma then do that.. .. but a double cab is worth it in long run.. is she going to be taking the child most of the Times in her car?.. if so ... worst thing you could do is permanently keep a car seat in yours.. so all you have to do is move baby nothing else... but with all that said its better to spend money now.. than have a baby and no money to do anything
