I don't have any dogs myself but Id wager to say I could fit 2 in the backseat, 3-5 in the shell. Comfortably. Given 50lb dogs let's say..

I have a 48 lb dog and a friend has a 45 lb dog, so pretty close for comparison purposes. We dog sit when the other goes out of town, etc. Those two crazy canines are about all that can fit in the back seat. I don't have a shell, but 3 in the bed easy, 5 is getting crowded.

My 30 lb dog and my 80 pound dog fit with ease in the backseat of my DCSB. There would be plenty room for one more.

I would easily agree with 2-3 in the back seat. We have one 40lb and with a lot of gear in the backseat, she can still sit/lay with no problems.

I had to transport my wife's cat eight hours in my truck when we moved. It was a terrible expeience. I assume the cat thought it was dying the entire time based on the sounds it was making.

I know this is how many dogs, but just for reference based on past expieriences, the tacoma is not capable of transporting cats effectively, regardless of feline quantity, at least in the cab. I'm not sure about the bed however.
