Just wondering.... even though the 3.5 gets more horsepower, since they both essentially get the same torque where am I going to see the difference while driving them? Also wondering if the 4.0 would have better longevity than the 3.5. Seems like a smaller engine would have to work harder to generate more horsepower and therefore wear out faster. Correct?

I like smaller engines better. If you don't rev it up all the time, it won't wear out any faster than any other engine

The differences will be in gearing, changes in drivetrain components, and power delivery (meaning, the torque curve around every number except the peak hp/tq data). You'll probably have to wait for impressions, dynos and tests to know.

Don't think bigger engines will last more than small engines. If that would be the case look at the 22r Toyota engine or the 3.0 and 3.4L v6 from previous years, those engines are practically bomb proof

Basically no. Same torque curve will translate to the same driving experience, all else being equal. The transmissions are also different though. The big difference in feel will be at the top end.

The smaller engine only has to work "harder" if it runs at higher RPMs to produce the same horsepower. The 3.5 is a more modern engine and can extract the same amount of energy from less fuel. So while it is smaller, because the torque delivery is the same or better (remains to be seen exactly what the torque curve looks like), it isn't working harder. It remains to be seen how reliable the engine turns out to be, I suspect it will be good. Toyota has a reputation for making long lasting engines.

I like my torque 350+ ft # at 3000 rpm. Haha

All bolt ons + tuning solution. Capable of running high 13's.
    longevity?
No one can answer that. Is a new engine with new technology.

    Driving difference?
The 2016 will be considerably faster. There is no question about it.

That 3.4 was the best engine I have ever owned. Maybe not the peppiest, but yeah, bomb proof is a good way to put it.

Its based off the design of but not the same engine, as the engineer team discusses, its an all new engine in its own right and has not been used in other vehicles.

putting new hoses and spark plugs doesnt make it a new engine, but i see your point

Well no one has seen it besides under the hood or tore it down yet, im sure its more than plugs and hoses, but could be wrong.

yea, i didnt mean literally, kind of like a civic, you can lower it, put new wheels, paint, turbo, etc, but at the end of the day, its still a civic...3.5L lexus engine. nothing wrong with that, just not my cup of tea

Agree, love the interior, a lot of the components, but that front end and those quarter panels are hard to love.
