All I am saying is just wait until you drive the new truck. To each its own. Many people have said the 2nd gen feels outdated and cheap inside, others like the interior. Yes, the 4.0 is a very good engine, could the 3.5 be better or worse? We don't know but we will in a bit.

Everyone bitched and complained about the facelift for the 2012-2015 saying it was ugly. Now look, everyone loves it.
The 3.5 will be great and people will grow to love the new look. I'm so so on the face, it'll grow on me and it'll look great once All Pro, Pelfrey, ARB etc make bumpers for them and it gets lifted. The interior is amazing. If I could throw the interior into my truck, I would in a heart beat. People just hate change.

It was exactly the same grill change as the 2001-2004 facelift for the 1st gen.

The problem is really in the numbers. My 4.0 is better then your 3.5
It's more of a testosterone argument that bares little resemblance to the actual performance of the two. The same guy will argue, my diesel is better then your gas...even though the diesel is 2.8 L and the gas engine is 3.6L

totally agree with the statement, Engine technology has evolved and the 3.5 has more technological features that the 4.0 so let's just wait and see

If high-revving engines did not last long you would never see the bajillion or so old Honda Civics from the old days that are still on the road.

    Exactly, look at the Eco-Boost. 3.5L twin turbo+ $500 Tune = 421WTQ and 347WHP.

I'll take the Schmeeko-boost. Makes peak torque at like 2800-3000 RPMs. Lower than the 5.0L. And it makes more of it too...

Just my opinion I would take the 4.0L over the 3.4L, while both are great, the 4.0L is chain driven while the 3.4L is belt. Also they both get roughly the same MPGs or the 4.0L slightly better according to Fuelly.com.

Toyota already has a 4.0L V6 in the 4Runner and FJ that puts out 270HP and 278 ft/lbs of torque.

The new 3.5L puts out 278HP and 265 ft/lbs of torque.

So the new engine doesn't give any performance gains over the V6 that they already had.

Mileage is marginally better, and not ALL of the mileage gains are from the engine. Some of it is from better aerodynamics.

So the question is: Why did they bother developing the 3.5L when it really isn't much of an improvement?

Likely to move to a unified engine. The 3.5 L block looks like Toyota's new go to engine. They'll make adjustments for each application but the block and much of the hardware will be shared. This is nothing new. Other companies have been doing this for years as engines have been getting better and better. The lack of a ton of difference between engines with the new technologies in the last 20 years allows for companies to run fewer engine types without losing quality.

People have been whining for an engine and transmission change for years. Now that they have it they are whining that they didn't get the 4Runner engine. Guess what, I can pretty much guarantee that the next 4Runner gets a derivative of this new Tacoma engine. The Tacoma isn't getting a V8 or Diesel for now, so either buy a 3.5 L because you want the 2016 or keep the 4.0 L in your 2nd gen. This debate is getting old.

I agree with your statement 100% . I read in another blog that the new 3.5L engine is all new therefore they can still make adjustments to the engine so it can produce more HP and Torque, just like they did with the 1GR with the dual VVTI. I am happy with the output numbers of this engine and as far as the mpg remember that Toyota has always been conservative with the MPG reports for their vehicles. I can't say the same thing about other manufacturers that state certain MPG and in real life the MPG is way lower. Just Marketing mimics.
