Not sure if this is the right place to post. Mods, please feel free to delete or move somewhere else.

I was involved in a car wreck this morning caused the other driver's negligence. Basically I got rear ended. The other driver drove one of them courtesy shuttles from a local Chevy dealer here in Vegas. State Trooper came to the scene and did a police report. Chevy Service Manager called and asked that I bring in my truck for them to take care of the problem for me, his words "since his employee was at fault."

I'm looking for the collective wisdom of Taco owners on this forum for guidance. I bought my truck two weeks ago with 2 miles on the odo, currently sits at 5XX. If the Chevy dealer repaired my vehicle without going thru insurance and there was a police report re: car wreck, will this wreck show up on CarFax when I trade in my truck or sell later? How much of a hit will I take in the resale/trade-in market now that there's a blemish to my shiny new truck?

If it matters, my intent was to drive my '15 DCSB for a couple of years and trade it in for a '17 or '18 Taco/F150 (don't hate).

Only things that show up on CarFax are things that are sent into CarFax. If a shop doesn't report to them, then nothing shows up there. It isn't a watch dog, it's a business.

Run your VIN and see if it shows.

    Too few to list.
Glad you're ok. I know that resale value takes a hit. Most buyers skip vehicles with accident records. From what I remember here in CA, accidents over $750 will need to be reported to the DMV so check with DMV. If they fix it on the DL, they might not report it.

My personal opinion...I would take it to a trusted toyota body shop, and get estimates. I would not take to a chevy dealer. Their employee was driving their car, so I would go through their insurance, and take to a shop to perform the work that YOU trust. Any diminished value on the truck can be taken care of through their insurance.

Hopefully, there were no injuries...Can you post pics of the damage?

First off, how bad is the damage?

If its bad, I wouldnt have Chevy touch it, I would go to a reputable body shop that has worked on Tacomas and I would get my insurance involved.

If its cosmetic damage, bumper replacement etc, then I dont see anything wrong with going down the chevy route.

You notify your insurance company immediate and get the info on theirs

exactly the same as any accident

deviate from this and you could get boned HARD

I have seen CarFax reports that show there's been a accident just because of the police. Generally they reference a case number even. Essentially it could already show up down the road just because of the police.

Good call on this. Depending on the state (most of them) police stations will report accidents to carfax.

Chevy dealer will "fix it" the cheapest way they can get out of, fixing it right isn't in their interest, that costs money, and bottom line, that is all it is about. money.
make it right or making it look good they could care less. you can bet if the tables were turned, you would be on the hook for a lot more than a bumper.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
You had better inform your insurance company or you may be dropped from your policy and stay away from the Chevy dealer

Nobody reports anything to Carfax, Carfax looks at vehicle records that are increasingly electronic, this is why you know about every oil change at a dealer, and every license renewal and title transfer.

do NOT go behind the scenes and have Chevy dealer fix it

you want the insurance company for both you and the dealer to be involved

    deviate from this

I am saying you are gonna be really really sad with the results

#1) your insurance will likely drop you
#2) there will be ZERO recourse if they mess up your vehicle
#3) They will mess up your vehicle
#4) they will mess up your ability to get new insurance in the future, no
one will want to touch you

Just to further add - my wreck showed up on CarFax not because the body shop reported it, but because of the police report. So I would say that there's a good chance it will show up regardless, and you'll take a decent sized hit on resale. I'd look into getting some diminished value.

I heard that CarFax actual purchases data from insurance company and that's how they get there information.

    What?

    As per carfax:

CARFAX® receives data from more than 86,000 different sources including every U.S. and Canadian provincial motor vehicle agency plus many police and fire departments, collision repair facilities, auto auctions, and more.

    No idea.

I just know there reporting is spotty, and therefore I don't give them much value at all. They don't show everything, and if they only show a glimpse of history as opposed to a full history, then they're pretty useless to me.

Tacoma frames are notoriously weak when hit from behind, and bend easily. Take it to a recommended shop.

Sucks that people keep sexting rather than pay attention to what's in front of them.

Right, just like anyone subscribed here receives data and info. the info is there for the asking, Carfax goes out and gets it. it isn't "reported" to them.

Anyone can get the info that Carfax sells without going thru Carfax, it may or may not be free for you to access, but it's there for the asking. Carfax did it first and mad e business out of it, there are others that do similar. Data mining, with a specific goal in mind. just like all the web crawlers and spiders for every search engine.

if you have access to the logs of this site, at any one time you can bet there are a dozen "bots" doing the same thing Carfax does, only with a different end goal and result.

The "spotty" reporting and missed info or inaccurate data, who enters the data ? Humans, I've seen wrong odometers entered on service invoices, theres an ODO INACCURATE hit on that vehicle now, how do you explain that to a buyer ?

    happens all the time.

Carfax is as spotty as it gets, that's for sure.
