Yes on both. The chassis has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) that is the maximum amount of weight the vehicle is designed to carry. For the 3rd gen Tacoma the GVWR is 5600 lbs regardless of config. Subtract the curb weight from the GVWR and that's the payload. The lightest config weighs 3980 lbs, leaving room for 1620 lbs of payload, and the heaviest is 4480 lbs leaving 1120 for payload.

Towing is a bit different but basically the same idea. There is a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) which is the max weight of the truck and the trailer. So the heavier the truck, the less it can tow. on top of the GCWR there is the towing standard that says you also have to be able to maintain a certain speed up a hill at GCWR, and also be able to stop and accelerate and various other drivability and safety concerns. Assuming both trucks have the tow package then the one that has a lower curb weight will have a higher tow rating. Again the max tow rating is 6800, and the min is 6400.

Wow that is a big hit for the DCLB. Thanks for reply.

Ford loves marketing that they've outclassed everyone. Then they revise fuel economy ratings that are only achievable on the treadmill (Cmax, Fusion Hybrid), say they will add the crash test bars to all the trucks rather than just the ones the IIHS tests, or get busted doing their legroom measurements on the Focus and Escape with the front seats in two different positions.

Me too. I've wanted a global ranger since they were first released. If that happens, I will be waiting in line to trade my Tacoma. And they look awesome lifted w/ a custom grill (kind of like what we do here...)

Payload doesn't look good for the Tacoma.

    ?

Actually I get better than EPA with my wifes F150 with a V8. Ford never mentioned anything about the crash bars, either positive or negative. It was only the IIHS that discovered the bars were only on the double cabs. Read into that however it makes you happiest. As for the legroom thing . Who cares. Do you buy your vehicles off an internet spreadsheet or do you go and drive them.

I've always had good luck with Fords. When the Ranger comes, and if it comes well equipped, I'll probably go with one. Sorry that for whatever reason that offends you. Would you like me to come up with every little thing wrong with Toyota? Cause even though I love mine I can list more than three :).

Is it me, or does the global Ranger look like the offspring of the Tacoma and Hilux?

I thought I saw one in Austin yesterday, said "ranger" and it was a ford. Looked to "roundy"

Not offended that you like them. Offended that I can't trust what Ford puts on paper. If I owned one of the trucks that didn't get the crash bars because Ford thought they'd get away with only putting them on the truck that would be tested, I'd be livid. Same deal with Ford advertising fuel economy of the Cmax and then coming out with a convenient "oopsie" on the road force load after the ads already ran. Do you think everyone pulls out a tape measure on the test drive? Do you think that companies should be able to say whatever they want in ads? If Toyota said that the Tacoma could tow 9000 lbs, which it probably can but very poorly, would you be pissed if you chose the Tacoma over a Canyon based on that spec?

I see them all the time too. Up from Mexico, going to and from the outlet malls. San Marcos is sick with them on the weekends.

I find the 15% offset test misrepresents a real world scenario. Actually all of the testing is pretty much pandering to a test rather than real world reflections. Toyota relabelled the Tacomas weight capacity years after it was released and several dealers allowed deposits on trucks that Mike Seers upsold to do things they won't.

It's all a marketing game. My point is Toyota isn't any more innocent than Ford. Buyer beware. Do your own research and do things like climb in the backseat to get the truth.

Anywho, it's all good. Divergent opinions are just fine. Again, after all my positive experiences with Ford and my local dealer, if they have a truck that is Tacoma sized I will likely not be buying anothet Tacoma. Especially if it comes with an engine in a totally different class than Toyotas 3.5 L.

I drove one of these Rangers while in Belize for a week this summer. Rough drive and very basic inside. It felt really rugged but it also felt like a truck that was designed 10-20 years ago. The diesel did get great mileage though.
