Top plate should not affect this topping out issue. It is outside of the coilover assembly.

^^ thanks for the clarification, I love my OME setup don't get me wrong I want more but it was a good first lift. my only issues with noise is I didn't set the dust shield right and it rattles on drivers side and the infamous Dakar squeak (I do the volume up on the radio "mod" to fix this issue)

I was completely ignorant when we installed it and didn't think about settling after a while... the shock top bolt was freely moving around and not tight so I grabbed some washers and I fixed that issue I know it was not bright on my side.

only armor I have is the rear and I have a pretty good ride with 885 and nitros on the front and Dakar pack in back with nitros.

He was likely asking if the top plate center hole might be started to go out of round, which would then make the upper shock mount loose and potentially make a banging noise whenever the shocks are jarred.

How is the shock outside the coilover assembly ?

Yes, I drive pretty fast down fire roads and they soak up the bumps very well. I do have the front end clank on the driver side that drives me crazy. Louder music seems to make it go away.

I was referring to the OP's removal of the top plate spacer. I never mentioned 'the shock'.

Sorry I misread your post , I thought you meant the noise was from outside the coilover assembly

I want a soft ride for hunting on really rough roads, not hauling butt down them but should be able to soak up pot holes and ruts without riding like a lumber wagon. Some guy is about to say its a truck it needs to be rough. I have owned and off roaded a lot of trucks. This is not enjoyable to ride in. My friend has a 13 taco with a cheap spacer lift and he couldnt believe how rough mine was compared to his. I wont be jumping this truck so bottoming out compression wise is not an issue but when you are crawling through rocks it should flex and the suspension should do its job in a controlled manner. Bouncing all over at slow speed is not good suspension. Airing down tires and adding more weight is a bandaid to the problem. I dont tow with this truck because its a tacoma not a cummins HD. I am considering going to the bilstein strut with stock coil and dropping tire size to a 265\75 but defeats the ground clearance I need to not destroy the underside of the truck regardless of body armor. I dont like dragging bottom on tiny rocks and mounds. Surely someone else has overcome this problem. IFS should not ride like a rigid leaf sprung truck.

    back to bone stock.
i went with the OME kit from Wheelers. just kinda blindly ordered it and installed it. cant even remember the numbers associated with my nitro shocks.

i'm running 884's on my extended cab. if anything it is kinda on the plush side of things. my friends drive it and comment on how it is kinda cushiony compared to their TRD sports. isnt the shock supposed to prevent the spring from extending and compressing too fast? we are thinking the 885's push harder than the 884's and the shock tops out harshly?

I don't know whats up with your set up, but it sounds like your only hope is find a spring that is the same rate as the stockers just longer to get your lift. Most of the lifts out there expect you to add extra weight because off roading, and most people add armor to protect from what they are crawling over. I know it isn't 3/4 ton truck, but you did most likely put tires on it that are rated for that or larger.

What does your friend with spacer lift run for tires.

This may not apply to you, but just because a vehicle can now clear taller obstacles doesn't mean it can go faster over them. Especially if the tires aren't aired down.

ETA: If you are going to buy the 5100's then try them with 885's first as you have them. If it is still bad then try preloading the stock coil, but it wont be much different from what most people on here say that have tried both.

The 885 are 10mm longer/taller than the 884. So in theory with 884 one should have a little more usable travel but not enough to make a significant difference if the truck is light like my 4cyl reg cab, my 884 still topped out all the time.

OP, changing tires to smaller diameter is just a step backwards, it will do nothing for this current issue. Dont do it!!

Another option would be to look into the spring rate of the 883 coils, i believe it may be the same as your 885 coils but even shorter than the 884s. This would give the OME coilover setup less height so again more downtravel. To get the lost height back you can use 3/4inch top plate spacer. ....anyway more food for thought instead of buying bilsteins.. If you are assembling things yourself this is cost effective but if youre paying for it just buy good coilovers and sell the OME stuff.

Don't think that will help. Sounds like he doesn't like the stiffness of the spring either.

This would bring the entire assembly into a more comfotable and useable range because the shock wont be nearly fully extended.

Never was at 3" , I got about 2 1/2" front and rear and have seen about 1/4" of settling in the front since install . The rear height goes up and down depending on loading , with just my 200lb cap on , the rear height is essentially where it was at install , adding an additional 250 lbs of tools drops the rear by about 1/2"-5/8"
